He worked as a locksmith but later became fully involved in acting. He was a member of the Municipal Theatres of Prague, then docked at the National Theatre.
Throughout his career he has worked for film and television. He has excelled in many films, but he has gained the greatest popularity with a role in Marie Poledňáková's You Take the Kids! (1982), where he played with Július Satinský and Pavel Nový.
He also worked on dubbing and lent his voice to Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie or Rainman. He also dubbed Polish actor Jerzy Stuhr in the film comedy Seximisia. In 2005 he received the František Filipovský Award for his dubbing work in the film Crime in Paradise. And last but not least, he directed, taught and cared for the Actors' Association, where he served as president since the 1990s. Last year, due to serious health problems, he gave up playing in the show Krejzovi and moderating the popular "Receptář prima nápadů" programme.
He and his wife Helena have a son, Vilém, and a daughter, Lucie, who brought him two grandchildren. He fell in love with ballerina Helena, with whom he lived for over half a century, at first sight. His wife had been the greatest support for him in recent months, when the popular actor was fighting cancer.
