The unique Pirelli calendar is being published, with a couple of breaks, for over 50 years. While last year, photographer Albert Watson had drawn inspiration from the world cinematography of the 1930s and 1940s, this year Paolo Roversi decided to use Shakespeare's timeless drama Romeo and Juliet as a motif. Why? Because he believes that in every woman, there's a piece of Juliet.
This time, 9 unique women stepped in front of the camera, each representing Juliet in her own personal way. Actresses Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart, Claire Foy, Mia Goth, Yara Shahidi, Indya Moore, singers Chris Lee and Rosalia and Paolo Roversi's daughter Stella gathered for the photoshoot in the city of Verona, a place that's indelibly linked to the fate of the young woman.
The calendar was being created in two phases. In the first one, the women representing Juliet arrived on stage without makeup and costumes. They released their emotions and shared with the photographer their ideas about Juliet, allowing him to reveal a bit of their personal side. In the second phase, they were already clad in luxurious costumes designed to transform them and enable them to interpret Shakespeare's famous heroine in their own unique way.
"I was looking for a pure soul, someone brimming with innocence, someone to embody strength, beauty, tenderness and courage. I found it in the eyes, gestures and words of Emma, Yara, Indya and Mia, in the smile and tears of Kristen and Claire, in the signing voice of Chris and Rosalie and in Stella's innocence. Because Juliet is hidden in every woman, and I'll ever stop searching for her."
The 2020 calendar contains 132 pages. It boasts a monthly calendar, excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and fifty-eight luxurious photographs color as well as black and white. The cover of the calendar opens with a drawing of the firmament of Heaven representing the universe, symbolizing the eternal story and love of Juliet and Romeo. Both the front and back covers are adorned with Juliet's date of birth, her first encounter with Romeo, their wedding and death.
The birth dates of all nine protagonists are also symbolically scattered across the calendar's cover. And how well do these famous beauties fill Juliet's shoes? See for yourselves in our gallery.
