The magnificent building of the Grand Palais

The large building of the Grand Palais was built on what is now Avenue Winston Churchill. It is traditionally used to hold various exhibitions and cultural events and it was in fact built for just such an occasion – the Universal Exhibition. The Industrial Palace originally stood on this site, built in 1855. The opening ceremony for the Grand Palais was held in 1900 with opening performed by the then president of France Émile Loubet. The whole building has been a protected historical monument since 2000.

The building is made of glass and steel and the ground plan is in the shape of a cross. Only French architects were chosen, the design in the end being drawn up jointly by Henri Deglane (design of the front part), Albert Louvet (design of the central part) and Albert Thomas (design of the rear part). Under the glass dome, the height of the building is 43 metres.

The building is only used on special occasions such as precisely this international exhibition of contemporary art.
