He has been feeling threatened for several years now, but he is used to it. They threaten me with death, says Jiří Mádl
He feels equally good as a director and as an actor. He has not yet found his acting limits and his acting model is Philip Seymour Hoffman. This was revealed by Jiří Mádl, whom we interviewed at the Czech Lions.
What does the nomination for the Czech Lion mean to you?
I'm very happy about it and I'm glad that we have many nominations as a film, because I'm convinced that all components of the film worked. That's its great strength, that the film holds together. So I'm very happy about that, that we're all here as colleagues, that we have such a nice gathering from the Lions.
You are successful abroad, did you expect that?
Honestly, I expected that it would be successful abroad, I was absolutely convinced of that.
I wasn't sure about the success here, but in the end, we had one million two hundred thousand people come to us in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and we are thrilled. I would like to thank everyone: "thank you very much."
Do you feel more like a director or an actor?
I feel exactly the same as a director and as an actor.
What would you be willing to do for a role? Gain weight, lose weight, dye your hair, where is the limit?
Everything you said, I've already experienced. I think I haven't found any limit yet.
Do you have a dream role or role model you would like to get closer to?
My favorite actor is Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is no longer alive, but he is truly my great inspiration. Before each important movie that I start shooting as an actor, I watch his movies or compilations of his performances, his interviews.
I would also like to ask a current question. Do you feel safe in the Czech Republic? I'm asking in connection with what is happening around us. How much does the topic of safety touch you?
Of course, this topic affects me. It's a different sense of danger. I've been feeling danger for several years now, because I'm being threatened with death, or that someone will "break my face". I'm used to it, which may be strange for someone, but it's inevitable. And this situation is different.
It affects me a lot and for the first time I'm really thrown off by the international situation.
You say you're facing threats, how does this manifest?
It manifests itself in all sorts of ways. In the twenty years I've been doing this, there have been so many manifestations.
How do you deal with criticism on social media, do you comment on it, do you read it?
I think we all need to learn as quickly as possible that first and foremost, and very radically, we should be interested in where the criticism, opinion, information is coming from, and only then, what the content of that information is.
What can we look forward to from you in the near future? Can you reveal?
I am starting to film a movie in a week, where I have a beautiful one of five main roles, it's such a group. I am looking forward to that.
Because of that I will go bald, I will have to shave my beard after a long time, so it's always a challenge, I'm looking forward to that.
Then I will film a fairy tale, just like I work.
In which role do you feel best?
It's hard to say, I always feel very good in a role where I have to change my personality traits. I know I am somewhat known for making big changes, when I have to start speaking a little differently, with a different voice, changing movements, so in the end when I find it, it's the most comfortable for me.
The worst is when I play a role and I feel like I've already played it or I hear myself as I've already said it.
