Open House Prague 2019: Water tower on Letná offers a Mars view!
Open House Prague invites you to visit unique Prague buildings that have a lot to offer. One of them is the water tower in Letná.
Award-winning tower reconstruction with luxurious views
The former waterworks were built in the second half of the 19th century, but only the tower was preserved. In the years 2015 - 2018 it underwent a total reconstruction worth more than 62 million CZK, undertaken by the Hájek architectural studio. A small building for children and a part of the nursery were added to the tower. The construction won two awards in the Building of the Year competition.
Nowadays, the tower is open to the public as a luxury look-out point, but also as a space for thematic exhibitions. In addition, you can visit a small library, which, together with the adjoining tiny room and toilet, served as an apartment for the operator of the steam engine in the water tower.
Stunning views of your surroundings - and the space!
An interesting feature is the periscope. It is located in the place of the former water tank, which can no longer be found here in its original size. The interior presents it in the form of a removable hinge placed in a circle that refers to its original diameter. The periscope will enable you to see as far as the Žižkov Tower and it can also be used to observe the night sky - you’ll be able to spot planets such as Mars, Jupiter or Saturn.
Visitors won’t be able to get higher than the luxury walkway tower, although it is possible to climb the ladder to the attic, which has also been renovated. It provides an even more interesting view; the water tower is the highest point in the area.
