Traditionally, we associate the most beautiful Christmas atmosphere with the Czech Christmas mass, also known as Rybovka, which has its origin in the year 1796. The story tells of the preaching of Christ’s birth and of the arrival of the shepherds to the crib. Once you take part in the experience of a true Czech mass, such as the one by composer Jakub Jan Ryba, its charm will keep you continuing this tradition from that moment on.
You can attend to hear the fantastic Rybovka, but you can also attend to join in song at Letná at the alcove near the Letenská castle on Sunday 23. December 3 pm. Beautiful solo performances will be ensured by Eva Müller’s soprano, Štěpánka Andělová’s alto, Ondřej Benek’s tenor, Martin Matoušek’s bass, and Jakub Zicha, who will perform on the organ.
The Czech Christmas Rybova mass will also take place at the highly frequented main train station on 23. Decemer from 1 pm. Everyone is welcome. You only have to bring your sheet music in case you don’t remember the words. The music will be traditionally led and conducted by conductor Lukáš Prchal.
You can come to enjoy Rybovka a few steps away from the Old Town Square under the heavens on Christmas day. The unique rendition of the mass by the mixed choir Vox Pragae, the Praga Sinfonietta Orchestra, and by soloists will begin at 9 pm.
Visit the cathedral of st. Vít, Václav and Vojtěch at Prague castle on the 20th of December. You will be able to enjoy the performace of the mass Rybovka along with students, parents and teachers of the school ZUŠ Hostivař, with guests from foreign partner schools, and with the chamber orchestra from Hostivař and with Canto Carso, Jasoň and RadHost choirs, which will surely enchant you. The performace begins at 7 pm.
Don’t forget to visit the Church of Our Lady before Týn on 24.12 from 4:30 pm. A traditional rendition of the Rybovka mass awaits you there. You can attend Rybovka at the same venue on 13. January as well from 21:30 pm.
We have one more tip for you in the event that you won’t be able to make it during Christmas. You can catch the performance of the Christmas mass by J. J. Ryba at the st. Peter and Pavel Basilica at Vyšehrad the 6. January 2019 at 4pm.
