The signature style of Karen Walker is an eccentric elegance in the spirit of vigorous and optimistic designs. These are not only a high fashion thing, but especially wearable pieces – unless you want simplicity and soft tones, you will not find much of that in the collections of this creative New Zealander.
Karen Walker opened her first boutique in 1995 in Auckland. Over the years, she has gained a prominent position and her luxury brand is sold by the New York fashion house Barneys or Liberty London. She also became part of the wardrobe of Hollywood stars, including Lady Gaga, Bjork, Alex Chung, Kate Bosworth, Zooey Deschanel, Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Natalie Portman and Kylie Jenner. Karen Walker also designed Kate Winslet's clothes in the science fiction drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Karen Walker's latest collections are called Escapism, Lost in Paradise, Mutiny and Love Letter. All four are characterized by distinctive patterns and fresh colors. In terms of material, the designer has chosen both classic denim and cotton, as well as luxury printed silk.
The designer regularly updates her collection of sunglasses and creates divine pieces that are diametrically different from the classics of other designers. Besides them, she also focuses on luxury handbags, fragrances, jewelry, and creates limited products. One such item is the indestructible Cosmos umbrella, designed to withstand wind speeds of up to an incredible 100 km/h.
Fashion and stylish accessories are not the only areas where the designer excels. She also offers designer items for the apartment and kitchen. The latest collection includes a practical organizer, tea kettle, mugs, saucers, cake rack, towels, or a cute cookie mix for preparing delicious cookies.
I only first heard of Karen Walker recently, and her work immediately seemed a little different from the other to me. It's similar to someone taking a bar shaker and mixing current trends with 70s retro. This was by the way the designer's childhood period, so the elements are really authentic. But why not? Doing everything in retro style (including the dishes) is very trendy these days.
I love the silk cut loose dress in combination with those orange-white sunglasses. Perhaps every woman has days when she just wants to feel comfortable but chic at the same time. Like at a Sunday brunch where you want to have some extra cake...and tight jeans are 100% not suitable! This dress is perfect for such occasions.
But what about the sweater worn by the new Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle? Khaki coloured cashmere with a delicate chevron pattern supplemented with leather trousers – a first-category misstep for me. Not only is this darker khaki color in itself quite unsightly, and does not go well with dark skin, but the combination with black leather makes a completely cheap-looking outfit. So, ladies, if you planning to combine cashmere with leather, think about it three times before you do, because pulling off such a combination is really art!
