49th KVIFF, 2014

In the gallery below the article we have prepared for you a view of the festival posters; from 1995 to present. How did graphics develop throughout the time?

Posters from the years 1995 to 2000 were characteristic by the aesthetic style, referring to luxurious film creation. The 34. year paid tribute to Oldřich Nový, who would have that year celebrated his 100th birthday. Interesting also is the poster of the 35. year, where the Crystal Globe turns into a beautiful muse.

Photographs play prim up to 2009

Posters from the years 2001 to 2006 show main characters of festival signature tunes. Still the central motif is a special photograph and that remains to be the case also in the following two years.

The turning point comes with the year 2009, the 44. year of the film festival. For three years the lead role is assumed by writing and its graphic layouts. The author was Zuzana Zednická and citylights were adorned by posters with different types of creatively processed fonts.

The 47th year introduced total minimalism

After the year 2011 came minimalism. In 2012 (47. edition) it seems as though the makers shut down their creative thinking. The poster contains only the number 47 on a white background. The next year the creators played about with the numbers - placing number 4 into one of the arches of the number 8. The luxurious poster from the 49th year (2014) ingrained itself into the memory of a lot of people. Yes, it is the notoriously-known, very minimalistic, hand-drawn pig which makes up the digits 49.

A half-century jubilee is celebrated with the festival visitors

The 50. year looked back at the good old times, depicting festival visitors of previous years. The photos were made by photographer Václav Jirásek who photographed the incoming festival visitors for four years. On one of the posters you can count more than 430 portraits.

The black and white style of recent years

Black and white photography is coming back, even to festival posters of the 51. and 52. year. Retro simply dominates the world. This year´s poster is again in the spirit of minimalism, here too you will find a play of numbers. But only if you look carefully! It refers to the 53. year and a 35mm film, from which will be projected the opening film by Miloš Forman, Loves of a Blonde. Without the prerequisite explanation only a few people would recognise the interconnection. The festival poster in a black-and-white and black-and-red version comes from the advertising studio Najbrt.
