Do you know the controversial works of Philip Roth?

Some of his books were thought to be sexist, by many women considered them to be disgusting. He probably did not impress any feminist. True, Philip Roth did not mince words. That is why for many he was such a valuable, favourite writer. No taboo topic was beyond him. He was not afraid of topics such as death, sex, Judaism. He was often accused of spreading pornography and condemned for his anti-Semitic views.

Books of this notable American writer stand on a borderline of autobiography and fiction. He came from a Jewish immigrant family but he was himself born in America and grew up as an American. The question of integration of Jews into American society is in his books often touched upon, sometimes directly, sometimes less obviously.

Philip Roth runs away from his fame - to Prague!

If you have not yet read any of his books, take into your hands Portnoy´s Complaint of 1969. It is precisely this book that brought him the greatest glory and admiration, from which he fled - in those days to Czechoslovakia of course. He often spent his time in Prague and our capital city or our country often appear in his books. It was in Prague, too, where he drew inspiration for his novel of 1985, Prague Orgy. How did Roth spend his evenings and nights in Prague, we can only take a guess, but probably not just with fellow writers.

Philip Roth died at 85 years of age. As far back as in 2012 he withdrew from public life and said that he shall not write another book. His last wok is entitled Nemesis.

Kasematy, Gorlice - Vyšehrad

A night in the museum can be scary and even terrifying. Hours spent among items used by our predecessors (frequently for activities that are no longer acceptable) can make for a very lively imagination. Do you believe that the long queues will be the only thing you should be afraid of on Museum Night? They may not be so long at midnight.... and the event ends at 1 a.m.!

Prague at night

Museum night takes place in Prague every year and it attracts a great number of people interested in history and culture. But museum fans are not the only ones this event is intended for. It will also be interesting to people who simply want to make a classic Saturday evening more interesting.....or want to enjoy something a little scary....

We know were you will get goose bumps!

There simply has to be something among the 50 deluxe museums, galleries and other cultural institutions in 77 buildings in Prague, which will be open on this night, to unsettle you a little. The most important thing is to set out when it is completely dark, when all the children are fast asleep....

A night time walk to Vyšehrad past the cemetery, where famous people from our country are laid to rest, could be a good beginning. Visiting the casemates, the underground corridors that were created for rapidly moving armies, and Gorlice Hall, the biggest underground space, also seems pretty promising. What impression do the deluxe statues from Charles Bridge, which are displayed here, give in the underground gloom.

Visiting Chlupáč’s Museum of History with your children during the day is a laugh. But imagine going at midnight when the children are gone, and the enormous skeleton of an ancient dinosaur rattles its bones and starts walking towards you....

Most of us are afraid of dentists even in the daytime. Visit the Museum of Stomatology during the Museum Night event and you can expect a commentated tour every hour around the deluxe inventions in the field of dental medicine and jaws. Did you hear something? Maybe someone behind you was grinding their teeth? We recommend the last tour at midnight!

How to orientate yourself on Museum Night?

In order to facilitate orientation there will be stands set up (in front of the Historic National Museum building and on náměstí Jana Palacha) with a detailed map of the locations where Museum Night is taking place, and mysterious buses marked Museum Night will be travelling through Prague, which will make it easy to travel between the locations and buildings.

You can find all the information you need on the website of the event.
