As children we probably all listened to our parents’ “nagging”. Either they were forbidding us from doing something or trying to talk some sense into us. But what we hated when we were younger is something we insist on now. Today we seek out what bothered us when we were children. Everything comes with age. Even the discovery that our mother’s are always right and that they “know” much sooner than their children.

A day in honour of mothers and motherhood

This is celebrated on various days all over the world. For example in the 16th century Mother’s Day was celebrated in England under the name of “Mothering Sunday” and was held during Lent before Easter. In ancient Greece people celebrated the day of fertility and mothers, combined with veneration of the pagan goddess Rhea – Cybele, the Mother of Gods. This day began to be celebrated in Czechoslovakia in 1923 and celebration of this day was promoted by Alice Masaryková. After the Second World War it was gradually supressed by celebrations of International Women’s Day, but after 1989 it started to be celebrated publically again.

Mother’s Day is on 13 May this year

Mother’s Day is celebrated here in the Czech Republic always on the second Sunday in May. And it is custom that children give their mothers handmade gifts or even poems. Flowers or boxes of chocolate are poplar with adults now. But it doesn’t really matter. It’s about our mothers knowing that we would probably not be where we are right now without them.

And what about Czech celebrities?

We all admire someone. And so we asked our celebrities which woman inspires them and makes them stronger. Jana Adamcová was unable to choose someone specific: “I am always inspired by a woman who is strong, overcomes great obstacles and sacrifices herself. I really believe in charitable actions. So everyone who does something for others inspires me.” On the contrary, Monika Marešová knows exactly who inspires her “My mother“.

Don’t forget the fathers!

We celebrate Father’s Day just like we celebrate Mother’s Day. In many countries, including the Czech Republic, this day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. But in some countries it is traditionally linked to Saint Joseph’s day on the 19th March.
