Open House opens DRN: the glass house that divides the inhabitants of Prague
If you are often in the center of Prague, you have certainly noticed that a new modern building - Drn - has been built on the corner of Mikulandská and Národní Street. Thanks to the festival Open House Prague, you will have a unique opportunity to see this new addition to the field of modern Prague architecture.
The building was built between 2012 and 2017 and its construction has swallowed 1.5 billion Czech crowns. The author of the project is architect Stanislav Fiala and the space was originally intended as a parking lot. Initially, Drn was then supposed to be a hotel, but the plan was never followed up on. Now the building is a place for offices, shops and galleries.
The glass house is provoking contradictory reactions
Many new buildings in Prague are rousing contradictory responses from its inhabitants. Does the round-shaped ultra-modern glass building look good next to the historic Schönkirch House? Can a building such as Drn elevate the look of the city, as did the Dancing House, for example? Some admire the luxury of the modern design and the glorified terrace, from which the view must be amazing. Others condemn the building, saying that such houses will slowly flood and devaluate the historic center. Not even the fact that old material from the original building was used in the constuction can change this attitude. You can admire it, for example, in the reception area and on the ceiling.
All the way to the luxurious terrace, thanks to the Open House Festival
The Open House Prague Festival in May will allow everyone to formulated their own opinion on the building. From May 19th – 20th, Drn will open its doors to the public and visitors will be able to look into the interior of this building. The large wooden terrace that offers panoramic views of Prague will definitely be a magnet for everyone. In the summer, the greenery will flourish here, and soon the metal gallery should be adorned with tulips in the colors of the Czech flag.
Drn offers beautiful spaces up high and on the ground. While on the rooftop terrace you will have a great view of Prague, below you will find a pleasant courtyard where visitors will be able to sit in the garden of the restaurant.
