Luxury art and the legacy of Egon Schiele

Most of the buildings in the historical centre of the town date back to the 16th century. You can see all there is to see in the small centre in one afternoon and you will want to take a seat wherever you go, to have a look into every single one of the little shops. You should not miss out on a visit to the luxury premises of the Egon Schiele Art Centre, where there is a permanent exhibition devoted to the prominent artist who fell in love with Český Krumlov and lived there for a long time. The exhibition is always supplemented to include interesting short-term examples of works by other Czech or foreign artists.

A castle or a chateau? Both!

The castle and chateau grounds in Český Krumlov are the second largest in the Czech Republic (first place being taken by Prague Castle). A castle dating back to the 13th century originally stood here. This was extended during the 14th century and converted into a Renaissance chateau in the 16th century. It gained a somewhat Baroque and Rococo appearance during the 17th and 18th century. The luxurious chateau gardens themselves are also worth a visit, as is the theatre which is the most beautiful example of a Baroque theatre in the world.

Some bears have found a home in the castle moat. They probably don’t really guard the grounds, but they do provide a pleasant diversion for visitors of all ages.

Water and beer –endless fun!

It is surely not possible to be bored in Český Krumlov. Thanks to the Vltava, there is fun to be found here for everyone. What about floating downstream on inflatable rings, trying your hand at rafting, night rafting or floating around Krumlov by starlight while listening to the truth about the legends of this amazing town? Or do you rather long for an excursion to the luxurious local brewery? The choice is yours! Whatever you do choose, Český Krumlov is certainly worth a visit.

Search for the keyword “hamami”. The local employees will greet you with a smile and bring you to a changing room, where you’ll get changed into a sheet. This is then followed by a luxurious extremely hot sauna, during which your body will get rid of all toxins. The sauna is usually used by men as well as women. Afterwards you’ll move to a room where you’ll rest and pour refreshingly cold or lukewarm water.

In the middle you’ll find a gigantic boulder on which you can lie, but the baths also offer massages for men which look a bit drastic at first glance. However, the local masseurs and employees know what they’re doing. Sometimes you’ll also find women’s massages on offer, but for instance in the luxurious Aga Hamami women have their own separate room for massages.

Ladies, let’s get clean!

Women sit near cold faucets in a large room, and after a while a Turkish woman will come and bring them to the next room, where “cleaning” takes places. There, they are undressed from their sheets and a special tool is used to prepare a luxurious bubble bath; bubbles are then used for massaging. Note that the procedure might not be pleasant for everybody! But after being rinsed everywhere, you’ll be rewarded with a great feeling. First, knowing that it’s finally over, and second, you’ll really feel a certain physical as well as mental relief. Afterwards you get a dry towel and can move to an elegant room, where you can just relax on carpets and pillows and drink strong black or green tea.

What will you feel after leaving from a Turkish bath?

First of all, you’ll feel completely clean and pure and you’ll have a pleasant uplifting feeling for the rest of the day. If you ever visit beautiful Istanbul, make sure to try this luxurious experience, it’s really worth it! And that’s quite the recommendation, considering the fact that I personally can’t stand saunas for more than two minutes and would never have considered it enticing to let a stranger wash me naked!
