Czech violinist Pavel Šporcl, who mainly plays classical music, loves musicals and is married to the famous singer and actress Barbora Kodetová. They hope that their daughters will live life as beautifully as they do.
We met Pavla Šporcl and his wife Barbora Šporclová Kodetová, with whom he has been for twenty years, at the Czech-Slovak dance. In the interview, they talked about their relationship and daughters, what they like and also revealed what plans they have.
How long did it take you to prepare for this evening?
Pavel: It took me very short time, it's simpler for men, so about fifteen minutes. We have known for three days that we would be going here
Barbora: I found out relatively late, so I responded quite quickly. So overall preparation about two hours.
Do you dance? Will you dance tonight?
Pavel: I used to go here to the Smetana Hall for dancing classes as a student of Prague Conservatory and I made it through one and a half lessons.
My mother danced in a folk ensemble, so the only thing I learned in childhood is the polka and a little waltz, that's all I can do, and what we once tried to dance together.
Otherwise, I'm certainly not a dancer, but Bára would probably like a dancer at home, but she gave up after those years and knows it's not worth it.
Barbora:
I have liked dancing since childhood, but I am not a great dancer.
I danced the most outside of the conservatory, where there is a lot of movement, so in the movie Dance Teacher, where I played a dancer, that's where I trained.
Pavel: Bára is very agile, actresses are like that. Bára has beautiful movements, I sort of couch-surfed through it. I've been invited to StarDance several times, but that would be the only thing that would make me learn it, otherwise no.

You mentioned StarDance, but would you go on a reality show?
Barbora: No, not at all. I would never go to a reality show. StarDance is something different, it's cultivated, beautiful and thoroughly tested over the years, but not a reality show.
Pavel: So far, we haven't found any that would have such a social level for us.
Barbora: I think we have our own reality show at home with our daughters.
Pavel: And two dogs and four cats, that's enough.
You've been together for many years, do you have a recipe for a long-term relationship?
(laughter) Barbora: We've been together twenty years this year.
Pavel: We like to laugh, even together.
Barbora: Well, humor is probably the most important thing, and maybe human kinship, and especially at the moment when one can't, the other takes over and that's how we complement each other. There are moments when we would kill each other, we're completely normal people, but we have a nice relationship.
Pavel: We also have a beautiful family and we respect traditions.
Barbora:
You don't run away from a fight.
Pavel: Today it's terribly easy to get divorced, you can do it remotely, if I exaggerate. For many people it's that simple.
Barbora: We are fighters, sometimes we're deadly to ourselves, like everyone else, but we don't run away.
You have almost adult daughters. What kind of father are you and how do you in this context approach suitors of your daughters?
Pavel: I welcome everyone. (laughs) I am accepting, a person cannot do anything else with it, it is pointless.
Barbora: In this we are also similar. We are tolerant, perhaps that is why we've been together for so long, we can be tolerant.
Pavel: The more a person would go against, the daughter would also go against, of course. Somehow we raised them, sometimes it seems to us that we did well and now it's mostly up to them. A person cannot force them, they can give them advice, best when they ask for some.
So we're releasing them into the world, just as parents released us and we have to hope that they won't get into any ugly situations or parties by mistake.
Barbora: But it doesn't look like it.
Pavel: No, it doesn't look like it, but anything can happen, but their fate is somehow written and we just have to hope and lovingly pamper them, so they live their life as nicely as we do.
How do you perceive today's music scene? Do you have a favorite group, singer, that you go to see?
Barbora: I've never really gone out partying, so we understand each other in that respect. I like today's music, thanks to our daughters we have a quite an overview of what's happening in the pop world.
We love musicals, even the new ones, our whole family goes.
Our daughters naturally took over this. I like that. I like Billie Eilish, Phineas, Ariana Grande and many others. I believe there are a lot of interesting young people.
Pavel: Even though I come from the classical music background, it may seem like I only listen to classical music, but I hardly ever listen to it, because I play it. We just returned from New York where we saw three Broadway musicals, before that we already saw almost everything, so that's our big love. I went to a Tides concert with my girls, Billie Eilish was already mentioned by Bára, when I was in Berlin with one of my daughters, there is an amazing music scene, we were in various clubs. Currently, I have a new project, a new program and a new album, which is rock, so right here in the Smetana Hall, in two months on 29th April I will have a big rock concert. I like to deviate from the classical music.
We are very open, to everything.
Barbora: I, on the other hand, love chanson. I love singing chanson and musical things and I learn a lot from my girls.
What does luxury mean to you?
Pavel: Luxury is tranquil to live a normal day, that's luxury for us. Money is fleeting, jewels are fleeting, but health, which fortunately we have, is most important. A healthy, happy, beautifully lived life is luxury.
Barbora: I totally agree with that. I was raised in a family where care was taken to dress beautifully and surround oneself with beautiful things that don't have to cost millions or hundreds of thousands, but are just beautiful.
To plant a new tree or to have the opportunity to take care of a garden, that's a luxury for me.
