Kate Moss is one of the few models in the world who has been at the top for more than three decades. She started her career in 1988, but to this day she remains the face of luxury brands. She became a pioneer of very slim to thin models with sharp facial features. However, she hit a few speed bumps on her journey.
Kate Moss was born January 16, 1974 in Croydon, south London. Her mother Linda Rosina was a bartender, her father Peter Edward Moss was employed in a travel agency. She has a younger brother, Nick Moss. Her parents divorced when she was 13. She attended Addiscome Elementary School in south London.
In 1988, Sarah Doukas, a founder of Storm Model Management, discovered her upon returning from a family vacation in Bahamas - she was 14 then - at the JFK airport in New York. This woman was a pioneer of the 'waif' image - a very thin, tall woman with sharp facial features. Kate Moss became the ideal prototype for this type. This catwalk trend had started with Twiggy and Moss became her accomplished successor.
She started her modeling career in 1990, when she posed for black and white photos for a British magazine The Face. She became a face of Calvin Klein at the age of 18. However, the real breakthrough came when she starred in a commercial for the Obsession perfume, after which the whole world began to notice her. While some people respected and appreciated her, others called her anorexic.
'I was a scapegoat. The media had to put responsibility on somebody, and I was chosen. They felt free to say that because someone was thin they were anorexic, which is ridiculous.'
The careers of both Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell begun at roughly the same time, both came from south London, and it was no wonder that the couple were often seen side by side. They became an iconic fashion duo of not just the 90s.
Besides being a world-renowned top model, Moss has often appeared in music videos - The White Stripes, Elton John or Marianne Faithfull. She even appeared in Elvis Presley's post mortem video for his song from 1970, 'The Wonder of You'.
At the top of her career, Moss was famous for being a party queen. According to the journalist Maureen Callahan's book from 2014, she managed to take up to two grams of cocaine and drink a bottle of vodka during a single party.
She was dating Peter Doherty at the beginning of 2015. Doherty was known for his drug issues, heroin use included. Less than a year into their relationship, photos, sold to tabloid media, were published showing Moss and Doherty using drugs, which led to the loss of nearly 4 million dollars in her modeling contracts. However, she returned to do modeling in 2006 and signed more than 18 major modeling contracts in the fall/winter season.
As is the usual case with models, there was no shortage of men around her. One of the most watched relationship at that time was her brief romance with Johnny Depp. They met in 1994 in New York and their stormy relationship lasted until 1997. Four years later, she begun a romance with Jefferson Hack, the owner of Dazed & Confused magazine. Although their relationship lasted just a little over a year, they have a daughter Lila Grace together, born in 2002.
She and Pete Doherty met in 2005 at her birthday party and their romance lasted until their 'cocaine scandal'. She married the guitarist Jamie Hince in 2011. However, their marriage did not last either and the couple divorced in 2016. Since then, the model is dating Nikolaj von Bismarck, a photographer of the German noble house.
Kate Moss definitely doesn't slow down, and even after so many years at the top of the modeling business, she remains the face of many world-renowned brands. In the past year, she worked with many luxury brands such as Messika, Jimmy Choo, Coach or Giorgio Armani and she starred in a Matthew Williams' debut collection for Givenchy.
