Do you know what the Jan Palach Memorial, a cottage in Sirákov, Náplavka or the kindergarten in Pacov have in common? All four projects have been nominated for the Czech Architecture Award 2020. A seven-member international jury nominated a total of twenty-seven works for this competition show. The capital and the Hradec Králové region can boast the most nominations. We'll find out the name of the winning project, which will be announced by the Czech Chamber of Architects, at the end of November. Right now, LP-life.com will show you which nominated buildings we found most interesting – come have a look and see if you share the same opinion!

The fifth year of the prestigious Czech Architecture Award competition knows the names of this year's nominated realizations. A total of twenty-seven best projects were selected, including two lookout towers. The public will learn the name of the holder of the highest award on November 24 this year at a gala evening in the Karlín Forum. From a total of twenty-seven finalists, we selected the ones that caught our attention the most.

House in the treetops

I don't know about you, but I loved climbing trees when I was little! I also often built bunkers in nature with my brother, so I was very pleased with the nomination of architect Jan Tyrpekl, who impressed the jury with his project called Tree House.

"The aim of the project was to provide users with direct contact with the landscape, a strong authentic experience and, through that, try to awaken in people a deeper interest in the place where they live. It was self-built and financed by own resources,"

the author describes his realization in more detail. I‘ve got to tell you, I can easily imagine spending the whole summer holiday in such a "bunker"!

Rebuilt home of Jan Palach

Another nominated project that definitely deserves attention is the unique memorial of Jan Palach. Miroslav Cikán and Pavla Melková from the MCA studio were able to transform the original simple village house into a timeless place. I admit that I have not yet had the opportunity to visit Všetaty, but even from photos alone, the individual spaces evoke strong emotions in me.

"The original birth house was rebuilt and no authentic elements from Jan's life have been preserved. The form of the monument is abstract and symbolic. The purpose is to convey the message of Palach's sacrifice. The monument is a symbol of a situation where the life in our country received a harsh blow, along which came a challenge,"

the authors describe their nominated realization.

Modern kindergarten

Enough of the obsolete, multi-colored buildings where you take your children every morning! How would you like a completely modern kindergarten, which even hides a swimming pool in its garden? One such building can be found north of the center of Pacov. Yes, even this realization was shortlisted in the Czech Architecture Prize 2020 competition. Evidently, this building confirms the well-known saying that less is sometimes more.

"The kindergarten consists of the main two-storey building and five one-storey pavilions, linked by a connecting corridor. The pavilions, which provide home to the individual departments, are complemented by large wooden terraces. The whole area of the kindergarten is interconnected by paved areas,"

team from the Vyšehrad studio presents their work.

An unusual lookout tower

As the last nominated project, allow us to introduce you the Doubravka lookout tower in Prague 14. You may already know it, but probably not in this new coat. This 23.5 meter high dominant made of acacia wood, which comes from the workshop of Martin Rajniš and his studio Huť architektury, will also compete for the aforementioned award in November.
