One of the most modern churches in our country has been finished in Prague's Barrandov and its price has exceeded 150 million crowns! It's not surprising, seeing as only state-of-the-art technologies and building materials have been used. For example, underfloor heating and WiFi are available throughout the whole church.

The Church of Christ the Savior has been built due to the insufficient capacity of the parish church of St. Philip and James in Zlíchov. The parish of Prague - Hlubočepy has a scope of 30,000 people, which is why a new building had to be built so that the faithful could have a place to gather. Therefore, after 10 years, Prague has acquired a new sacral building. In the municipal district of Prague 5 itself, it is the first one in almost 80 years, i.e. since the official consecration of the functionalist Church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Košíře in 1942. The whole construction took two years.

The largest investor was the Roman Catholic parish, but money was raised through a public fundraiser, too. According to the parish priest Josef Ptáček, the spiritual father of the whole project, some have invested their life savings in it. The church was solemnly consecrated on November 22 on the Feast of Christ the King by Cardinal Dominik Duka. Since then, Sunday services are being held here.

Technical conveniences

The church is now one of the most modern buildings. In addition to being fully barrier-free, there is underfloor heating, a special lift, and an ingenious skylight, through which daylight passes into the church.

“The building is full of technical curiosities. For example, the chapel's frame is made of welded aluminum strips, which together weigh almost 10 tons. In order to achieve exceptional acoustic parameters throughout the church, we had to install special sound-absorbing boards on the walls. And thirdly, I would like to mention a ground-to-water heat pump that includes seven boreholes in a depth of 110 meters. What is also interesting about the project is the fact that we were forbidden to work on Sundays,"

reveals the project manager Josef Majer from Metrostav.

During the preparatory work, over 7,000 cubic meters of soil were excavated and taken away and over 2,000 cubic meters of concrete were used. The building is designed to be very economical, thanks to heat pump technology using seven boreholes with a combination of quality insulation of the building envelope. And last but not least, the greened part of the roof guarantees that current energy demands have also been achieved.

The pipe organ and bells are missing

The architecture of the Church of Christ the Savior is the work of Atelier Žiška, s.r.o. The design combines modern approach and technology with traditional elements. The cross-shaped floor plan surrounds the transept and a golden ring symbolically hovers above it, bringing light into the temple. The community center in the semi-recessed and south-lit basement is conveniently connected to the level of the terrain and the nave in a completely barrier-free way, the café is an extension of the park and playground. The private area of the church with the reception is near the spacious entrance hall, which is shared with the auditorium and clubrooms.

For now, the church is missing the pipe organ which is still being manufactured. However, the main cross itself is interesting. It is made entirely of glass. The front door is also unique, although it is not obvious at first glance. It is made entirely of glass as well, and there isn't any steel construction carrying it. A total of 41 benches are installed for contemplation and the church can accommodate over 350 people. The choir itself, the engine room, and a room for musicians are on the second floor. A spiral staircase leads to the walkable roof, which is built as the fifth façade. An additional part of the church's tower is the belfry, where bells will be installed in the near future.
