After a three-year period of renovation, the gates to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague have opened again. The main inaugural exhibition entitled Director’s Choice – The very best of the collections represents a walk through the most beautiful items belonging to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague.
On the luxury premises of the renovated museum, you can view around 300 exhibits dating from the Gothic period all the way through to the 20th century. This concerns collections of ceramics, glass and porcelain, but also clothing and works of graphic design.
Some of the items are on the display for the very first time ever. The exhibition is divided into 3 sections. The first room offers you a look at the oldest items from the museum’s collections, from among which the ladies will certainly be interested in the luxurious long dresses and interesting period shoes. The equatorial annular sundial with a stand dating back to sometime around 1600 by Erasmus Habermel is a truly unique exhibit.
The second room focuses on the 20th century. You can see here period posters and works of graphic art. Cubism is represented here, presented in the medium of ceramics and furniture. You will also find here beautiful clothing from the 20th century and one of the high points is most certainly Josef Gočár’s desk dating back to 1913. You will only recognise what a luxurious work this is on closer inspection!
If you are hesitating about whether to bring your child with you to see the exhibition, the last room may help you when making up your mind. This is a relaxation zone with books and a zone designed for children, offering them a look at old building blocks and toys. Entertainment is provided for them in the form of a large table on which they can play with a luxurious set of building blocks created using a design by the legendary Jaroslav Sutnar.
The exhibition is a showcase for unique items constituting a representative selection made by the museum director Helena Koenigsmarková. This selection is also intended for the special edition of books entitled Director's Choice containing the most beautiful collections from the point of view of museum directors and a description of them.
