What does the small town of Zermatt in the Valais canton have to offer in this German-speaking part of Switzerland? And below, why have we decided to offer you a recommendation for this luxury mountain lodge in the heart of the French resort of Méribel?
Zermatt is one of the most popular ski and mountaineering resorts in the Swiss Alps. You can find it at the end of Mattertal Valley at an altitude of 1620 meters. The town of Zermatt offers mesmerizing views of the majestic peak of the Matterhorn, which you can see every morning from your luxury ski chalet. The skiing resort of Zermatt includes three different ski areas, which are shared with the Cervinia Ski Resort just over the border in Italy. This entire complex of ski resorts offers a range of different types of terrain, which is particularly suitable for intermediate-level skiers. The total length of the 147 different trails is 360 km and there are a total of 54 ski lifts.
Most of the trails and lifts are located between 2500 and 3899 meters above sea level, which provides lots of cold weather both early in the season and for an extended season, so there is lots of good powder and snow late into the spring. In fact, the local lifts are usually open from November into early May.
Until the mid-19th century, Zermatt was primarily a farming town. Since then, it has become increasing focused on tourism and the town offers a very attractive blend of both the old and new, all of which contributes to the cosmopolitan magic of Zermatt, which is often identified by skiers as one of the world's finest ski resorts.
