Tight fight until the last minute

The victory was extremely close and a dramatic duel took place mainly in the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia and Pennsylvania. The current president, Donald Trump, surprised and did better than election polls showed. So far, Trump has won a total of 213 voters, Biden 273 voters. In the US election, it's not the number of votes that matters, but the number of voters. Each state has a set number based on the population. The future president needed 270 of them to win. But Biden defeated Trump even in the number of votes. He has over 74.5 million, the largest number of votes from voters in United States history.

Which other states were decisive?

The result was also significantly decided by states in which none of the candidates had clear support in advance. One such was Florida. In the end, Trump managed to get it with 51 percent of the vote. Experts originally attributed the victory in this area to the Democrats. Likewise, Trump triumphed in Ohio or Texas. He overwhelmingly won in Wyoming with almost 70 percent of the vote.

Joe Biden, on the other hand, succeeded in Arizona, which was dominated by Trump in the last election, or in the state of Maine. Biden won in California, Massachusetts and Vermont. He was most successful in the capital, Washington D.C., where he won 92 percent of the vote.

The most tense situation was at the end of the Pennsylvania counting. There, Trump led, but with counting the mail-in ballots, Biden began to pull back his lead and eventually skipped over him. The acquired 20 voters eventually won him the overall election.

"America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country. The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not. I will keep the faith that you have placed in me,"

What do Pirates and Milos Zeman think?

The actions of the next American president will, of course, also have an impact on events in Europe and around the world. Even before the counting, we therefore found out among Czech politicians which of the candidates they thought had a higher chance of winning, even what Biden's or Trump's victory would mean on the global stage.

The President of the Czech Republic, Miloš Zeman, said that he didn't want to interfere by giving a statement.

"I highly value Donald Trump's support for Israel, but I am not in favor of protectionism and a war of sanctions with China and other countries. So let the American voter decide. The Czech president will congratulate the winner,"

said Jiří Ovčáček, his spokesman, as the president's statement.

According to the Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Vice-Chairman of the Defense Committee for Pirates, Jan Lipavský, we can expect a complicated transfer of power. However, he said Biden's presidency would be in the spirit of the fight against the coronavirus.

"On the global stage, then, President Biden would mean a more predictable United States, as well as a greater will to take joint action - specifically, the United States could rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement or take back their withdrawal from the World Health Organization."

Awakened Americans

Turnout was a record high this year. At the time of Joe Biden's announcement of the winner, almost 145 million votes were counted. According to experts, the last few months, which were very dramatic due to the coronavirus pandemic, probably contributed to this. At first, voters in several New Hampshire settlements have traditionally cast their votes in the ballot box, then in Vermont, and later in the eastern and midwestern United States. Several months of election campaigns ended with the closing of polling stations in Alaska and Hawaii.

The mail-in ballots shook the results

The counting of votes took an unusually long time, mainly due to the tense battles in Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina, and the unusually high number of mail-in ballots that shook properly with the results. It was the possible machinations with those that Trump's campaign pointed out. They filed lawsuits in Michigan and Georgia - unsuccessful in both cases, another also in Nevada. Republicans also complained about the inability to access the Pennsylvania counting. Here, the court accommodated the president's team and made it possible to observe the counting up close.

Disputes and protests

There were also protests during the elections. Many people took to the streets, some with guns. Demonstrations have taken place in Phoenix, Arizona and Michigan, for example. While supporters of the Republican candidate protested against the alleged frauds, Democrat supporters demanded the counting of all remaining votes.

However, the conflicts accompanied the elections from the very beginning. They were triggered by Trump's speech about the alleged election fraud, in which he mentioned that he wanted to go to the US Supreme Court. That upset the Democrats' team. Shortly before that, Trump also declared himself the winner of the election at the White House, although it was still a long way to the finished count.

Promises of the candidates

According to the experts, this election, rather than on the actual program, based the political campaign of both politicians on the criticism of the other. While Trump repeatedly called his rival corrupt and even said in the final phase of the campaign that "if you vote for Biden, it means no children in schools, no Thanksgiving or Christmas," Biden sharply criticized Trump's approach to the epidemic. As for the programs, Biden promised his constituents a tax increase for the richest Americans or a transformation of the economy in the context of the climate change. Trump, on the other hand, set himself the goal of completing "the best economy in the country's history."
