Water is an element, that only freezing temperatures can still into the most wonderful sculptures. Ice climbing isn‘t easier than classic rock climbing, although you can make your handholds and footholds wherever you like. You need either prior experience in ice climbing or an experienced guide to do this sport. Are you up for it?

You‘ll experience something, that you‘ve never experienced before

Specialized gear such as ice axes and crampons are used, and rope attached to bolts is used for step by step supported climbing. We can date the beginnings of ice climbing back to the 70‘s of the 20. century, and it was first tried on icecaps in Scotland. This adrenalin sport is gaining a wider and wider following all around the world. The best time for climbing is between December and March.

Rocks or ice, which is more dangerous?

It‘s pretty much the same in that regard, it depends on the individual type of rock, ice or the weather factor. However, everything depends on the skill of the climber himself, his experience, and whether he is able to estimate his climbing abilities, and gauge the conditions correctly.

You might have a good partner, who you can depend on, because he supports you. You might even know the area, and you‘re quite used to the terrain, you know strategic exit lines and paths you can lower down. Even so, the most important thing is to know that:

Even a beginner can try this sport, there is a scale of difficulty. The estimated cost of doing this sport (wear and climbing gear) will set you back: 70 000 to 80 000 Kč.

Tips for luxury ice cliffs

Austria: Alzenbachl Eisfall (470m), which is located in the town Sőlden deep in the Ötztal valley

France: the famous route "Le Voile de La Mariée" in the valley of Valgaudemar or Freissinières valley in the Ecrins national park.

Italy: Carpe Diem in the Val Visdende region or the Cogne valley near Chamonix
