Charming surroundings of the Portobello Hotel

The surroundings in which the hotel is situated are balm for the soul. West London, with its heart in the Notting Hill district, is a much-sought-after location both for tourists and for the locals. The hotel is located near Kensington Gardens, a place to which millions of Londoners and tourists from all over the world flock every year. It is one of 8 royal parks in the capital.

Kensington Palace is a working royal residence of great historical importance. It was the favourite residence of several consecutive rulers until 1760. Queen Victoria was also born here and this is the place where she spent her childhood. Nowadays, Kensington Palace provides offices and also private flats to members of the large royal family.

The famous and unique Portobello Market basically represents several markets all rolled into one. Crowds of people flock here on Saturday and this is when you can experience the true atmosphere of a live market. People bustle around and barter and the streets are filled with colours and an intriguing energy. A characteristic feature of the Saturday market is opening of hundreds of stalls and lovely little antique shops. You can also come across talented and bizarre street artists here.

Diplomatic Spouses Association

The Diplomatic Spouses Association (DSA) was established in 1997 as a non-profit organisation. Its aim was to strengthen relations with the cultural heritage of the host country, to present the spouses’ own countries and to share information, interests and ideas. The association works on a voluntary basis and places great emphasis on charity work.

The International Christmas Festival helps Czech charities

The Hilton Hotel will provide 1,000 m² of space for this event, where the stalls of diplomats will be erected offering interesting products from more than 50 countries around the world. This project will also be run on internet auctions where private or corporate gifts are to be found. Proceeds from the entry fee and sale of products will be used to support Czech charities.

From the money collected thanks to the diplomats, a total of 34 projects will be supported, a few examples of which are as follows: school transport for handicapped children, a summer camp for children addicted to drugs, support material for hospice care at home, guide equipment for visually impaired skiers, rehabilitation facilities for children and senior citizens and much more. Every year, this festival contributes more than 2.5 million crowns to Czech charities.

A prestigious event at the end of every year

Testament to the fact that this is one of the most prestigious of all Christmas events is also the traditional ceremony. Members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of all 34 charities met up at the Grand Award Ceremony which was held on 2.5.2016 in Žofín Palace. The guest of honour was Mr Hynek Kmoníček, Director of the Department of the President of the Czech Republic.

Since 2000, the association has provided almost 64 million Czech crowns to charities, making it one of the leading local benefactors.
