Yves Saint Laurent: Dreams of the Orient

Yves Saint Laurent and its bedazzlement by Far East culture

Increasingly often, attention is drawn to diverse corners of the world. Among the popular themes of designers and clothing companies inspiration by luxury Asia is on the rise. It really offers a lot. Its sensual magic, tradition and art, completely remote to our conditions attracts us like a magnet. Yves Saint Laurent offers both real as well as imaginary vision of Asia.

During his career he was influenced by Indian, Chinese and Japanese traditional clothing which has brought to life his fashion creations. In its first collections he incorporated elements from the coats of Indian rulers. The Chinese empire inspired the collection of autumn and winter 1977, in which he showed the theatre and transformed image of the country. Also very well known is the beautiful kimono from the year 1944, which served as inspiration for his model.

Saint Laurent himself claimed that he has always been inspired by Asian culture, but rarely visited the countries in person, Japan being the only exception.

"All you need to do is to read a book or look at the picture and then use your imagination. I am in every country in my dreams."
