The Czech Republic was hit by some very sad news. Singer Eva Pilarová has gone to musician's heaven. The winner of three Golden Nightingales, who is indelibly connected to the Semafor Theater, Waldemar Matuška or Karel Gott, succumbed to a long illness.
Born and raised in Brno, she become widely known in the 1960s when she was performing at the Semafor theater alongside the legendary duo Jiří Suchý and Jiří Šlitr, among others. The singer with a strong soprano and a three-octave range is famous for hits such as Hrom aby do tě, lásko má, Requiem, Noc a den (Night and Day), Láska nebeská or Oliver Twist.
The public also came to love her duets with Waldemar Matuška, and her duet with Karel Gott Dotýkat se hvězd from the musical Kdyby tisíc klarinetů had great success as well. The writer Josef Škvorecký considered her the first Czech jazz singer and gave her the nickname "Fitz-Pilarová" with reference to Ella Fitzgerald. Eva also excelled in the field of swing music.
The singer who, in addition to the three Golden Nightingales, also received the Masaryk Academy Award, the South Moravian Region Award and the Medal of Merit, has suffered several fractures, had a number of surgeries and has been in the care of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo in recent weeks.
Many stars were touched by the death of the magnificent singer. They send the following words of comfort to Eva Pilarová in Heaven and her surviving relatives...
"I will always remember Eva not only as a queen of swing, but above all as a great person. She sang at our partnership ceremony, we were seeing each other in our private lives, she used to take our photos and was an amazing cook. With Eva's passing, we lost a great singing style and a real legend. I keep thinking of Honza, her husband, and all the beautiful things we've experienced together. The great songs that remain with us,"
"R.I.P. Dear Eva... Thank you allowing me to get to know you, sing with you, talk with you about music and life in general... Your beautiful voice and unique sense of swing have always made me happy and inspired me. I remember with love... L."
"People often ask me, whom I consider my top guests... it was she. I went to her little 80th birthday concert on the boat deck with my mother, who had it as a big surprise, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Her energy was amazing. I'm so sorry, my condolences to the whole family,"
Eva Pilarová's funeral was profoundly influenced by the measures imposed to stop the spreading of the coronavirus. Although the singer would have deserved a splendid farewell like those that some of her colleagues and friends had gotten, in light of the current situation, no memorial service will take place.
