The authoritarian leader has been ruling the country for decades

According to polls at polling stations, Alexandr Lukashenko has secured his seventh victory. US President Donald Trump announced a plan to impose a 25 percent tariff on all imports from Colombia and a number of other sanctions due to the fact that this South American country refused to accept two American deportation flights with Colombian migrants.

Surveys indicate another victory for Alexander Lukashenko in the presidential elections

According to polls at polling stations, Belarussian authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko garnered 87.6 percent of votes in the presidential elections, thereby most likely securing his seventh five-year term at the helm of the country. According to the electoral commission, 81.5 percent out of 6.9 million eligible voters took part in the vote. The exiled opposition has previously dubbed the vote a fraud as leading critics of the regime are imprisoned or have fled the country and independent media are banned. Lukashenko's victory was thus expected, stated the portal Ceskenoviny.cz.

Trump imposes tariffs on Colombia due to deportation flight refusal

U.S. President Donald Trump said he is ordering tariffs, visa restrictions, and other retaliatory measures against Colombia after its government refused two flights with migrants. Each of them had about 80 people on board. According to Trump, these measures were necessary because the decision of Colombian President Gustavo Petro "endangered" the national security of the United States. Petro had previously stated that his government will not accept flights with migrants until the Trump administration creates a protocol on how to treat them "dignifiedly", the agency AP wrote.

Australia Day commemorates the anniversary of British colonisation

Yesterday's Australia Day highlighted differences in the rights of the country's indigenous people and majority population. The event refers to the situation of 1788, which eventually led to Britain claiming the entire country without a treaty with its indigenous inhabitants. Protectors of the rights of indigenous people call January 26 the "Day of Invasion." Therefore, protest gatherings are held annually in major cities. The centre-left Labour Party government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese decided in 2023 to allow state employees to work on this day. This cancelled the previous conservative government decree, reported the AP agency.
