Each year the Karlovy Vary Film Festival welcomes actors of world format in order for them to receive the Crystal Globe from Jiří Bartoška for their extraordinary artistic contribution to cinematography. We take a look at the most interesting personalities who visited Karlovy Vary in the past 10 years. Let´s recall what it was like with them here at that time!
In 2007 the invitation was accepted by a surprisingly short actor of world format, Danny De Vito, whom you know from the film Romancing the Stone or the Jewel of the Nile. Until the very last moment, it was not clear whether he will come. That is because the actor very much likes to give his fans a bit of thrill.
A year later Jiří Bartoška got into a tight corner dealing with American actor, producer and director, Robert De Niro. He was probably made so nervous by his famous guest that he has forgotten to officially launch the festival. He thus had to come back onto the stage. Robert De Niro made most of his speech in Czech, by which he immediately won the audiences over.
The year 2009 belonged to Antonio Banderas and John Malkovich. The latter arrived in jeans and converse trainers and his journey to Prague main railway station by our famous Pendolino is a common knowledge. However, after that the famous actor chose a luxury transport by a limousine. John Malkovich visited the festival in 2011, when he also brought his own fashion collection from the untraditional men´s clothing line, Technobohemian, which was presented on the catwalk by Czech actors.
Jude Law is primarily the darling of female audiences. In 2010 he came here to Karlovy Vary and although one would expect that the young actor would have a lot of Hollywood-style mannerisms, he made an impression of quite a modest guy. He did not have any special wishes, beaming his smiles all round. He promised to definitely come again the next year ... and definitely did not!
The following years were devoted to beautiful women. In 2011 Karlovy Vary welcomed actress Judi Dench whom we all know from the famous Bond films as ´M´. A year later it was Susan Sarandon who glowed at the luxurious red carpet in front of the hotel Thermal, and despite the unfortunate weather at that time (rain pouring down even on the tent town) she radiated positive energy. She took part in public discussion with the audience and in the evening presented Witches of Eastwick at the summer cinema.
The 2012 is engraved in the mind of every film buff. He arrived in Carlsbad in a luxurious private airplane together with his family and had strict requirements: interviews must not be longer than 4 minutes, photographers were banned, and a meeting with journalists was to be no longer than half an hour. However, he devoted a lot of time to his fans, handing out signatures, moving into the rhythm of music from Pulp Fiction and in the evening in the summer cinema, before the screening of Grease he let his hair down during a short dance show which erupted into mob madness!
The year 2013 will also not be easily forgotten. American director and holder of three Oscars, Oliver Stone, used his space at the press conference for a political lecture. Some even left disgusted in its course, and there certainly wasn´t any applause at its end. Oliver Stone did not understand why we entered NATO. He was all het up about the fact that the world is unbalanced and that we need strong Russia and China in order to stand up to America. We are sorry Oliver, but a luxury film festival is simply not a place for that!
A year later we had the honour to meet with Mel Gibson, who in the summer cinema introduced Mad Max:Fury Road. Thousands of fans started to take pictures of the stage. What did he do about it? He took out his phone and in turn made a video of the entire crowd. Who knows whether he did not delete it the very same evening!
In 2015 the invitation was accepted by Richard Gere and Harvey Keitel. In 2016 arrived Jean Reno, but not really - his stopover in Carlsbad was of an ultra short duration, but he did not leave Bohemia completely. That´s because he was preparing to shoot The Last Adventures which was to be filmed in Bouzov, Prague and the Lednice château.
The year 2017 belonged to the beautiful and popular actress, Uma Thurman, who presented both pictures of Kill Bill in the summer cinema. Although she did not wish to give interviews and did not want to take pictures, she was smiling, caring obviously much more than for glory and admiration for her children, who also came with her to the luxury Karlovy Vary Festival. In short, a great, loving mother!
