The Best of Cannes! Looking Back at the Latest Festival.
Luxurious Palme d’Or award
This year, there were 20 films vying for the trophy shaped like a golden palm. Their creators all addressed key issues such as: global epidemics, politics, family dramas, refugee crisis. Who took home this award? The Palme d’Or for the best film went to the Swedish satirical feature The Square, whose central topic is corruption and blackmailing. The award for the winning drama went to director and screenwriter Ruben Östlund, who did not hide his immense delight at winning the award (see photo).
Grand Prix: Robin Campillo (France) for his film about aids AIDS - BPM.
The Best Director award went to the delighted Sofia Coppola for her drama The Beguiled, which takes place against the backdrop of the American Civil War.
The Best Actor award was presented to American actor Joaquin Phoenix, for his spectacular performance of a veteran striving to save a girl from human traffickers in the film You Were Never Really Here.
The Best Actress award went to Diane Kruger for the film In the Fade.
Best screenplay: Yorgos Lanthimos for The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Lynne Ramsay for You Were Never Really Here.
The Jury Prize went to Andrey Zvyagintsev for the film Loveless.
Even small merits count
The Czech representation also earned some credit. The Iranian film Lerd, for which director Mohammed Rasoulof won the main prize in the Un Certain Regard section in luxurious Cannes, was created with the help of Czech co-producers, namely Kaveh Farnam from MediaNest and Michal Křeček from Magiclab.
Conclusion
The only thing left to add is who participated in judging the films of this year’s 70th Cannes Film Festival. The president of the jury was Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar and its members were American actor Will Smith, Italian director Paolo Sorrentino and film score composer Gabriel Yared.
