The long wait is over. As of today, a lot of places are open for public, among them our beautiful castles and chateaux, of which we Czechs are rightly proud. Paradoxically, the coronavirus crisis helped the chateau Vranov nad Dyjí, as they could fully concentrate on its reconstruction. It will open its gate to the visitors on June 6, 2020, and we have a whole lot to look forward to. This year's biggest attraction will certainly be the Vranov tower, which will be made accessible for the very first time in history!

The Vranov Chateau is a true architectural pearl

The Baroque chateau of Vranov nad Dyjí has a number of stunning exceptional features that are worth seeing with your own eyes. The first of the chateau's peculiarities you'll be amazed by is its location. It stands proud on the site of a former medieval castle 80 meters above the river. The view of the chateau high on the rock is breathtaking. Its interiors are every bit as magnificent as the building itself. The oval Hall of ancestors will captivate every visitor with its dimensions and mainly its rich artistic decoration. Chateau warden Radek Ryšavý also fell in love with the chateau.

"I have not one, but several favorite places in the castle. Thanks to its topography, it looks completely different from each side, which the visitors admire just as much. I like the lookout over the Vranov valley, the view from up there never gets boring."

This year's novelty is the Vranov tower

The tower was built during the 14th century and guarded the third gate at the entrance to the castle. It is an interesting example of high Gothic architecture of the Luxembourg period; its masonry was built to its current height under Jan Henry, the brother of Emperor Charles IV, who was the then owner of Vranov. The tower is remarkable for its height of 24 meters. A prison was established on its ground floor in the Middle Ages, to which convicts were lowered by rope. Thanks to the reconstruction, visitors can now see the place where prisoners were kept. The current gallery of the tower is modern and tourist will have to walk up 109 steps to get there.

The biggest challenge of the reconstruction

If you start a reconstruction of any historical gem, you can be sure it will take a huge amount of effort and you almost always have to deal with multiple inconveniences. "The reconstruction of the tower was quite technologically demanding. All wooden elements had to be removed because they were infested with wood-destroying insects. Furthermore, the plasters had to be fixed and cleaned inside and out using the original technologies, especially lime water. The most complicated step was the installation of the steel gallery and the eight-meter mast at the very top of the tower,” explains Radek Ryšavý.

The price for real effort

The repair of the tower is being carried out simultaneously with the reconstruction of the roofs of the buildings in the first courtyard and the two guard houses at the gate. The total expenditure on the reconstruction is 27 million crowns.
