In 2018 we saw the making of a number of blockbusters as well as flops. Our editor spends almost as much time in the cinema as at home and therefore she has picked 5 of the best films for you, which you may agree deserve an Oscar!
A celebration of music made by Queen and mainly of its singer Freddie Mercury. It is the songs by Queen which are at the heart of the whole picture, showing how they were made. This also applies to the final appearance at Live Aid when the audience in the hall started to applaud. No wonder, because Freddie really appeared on the screen, who through his creation as well as life fought against all conceivable stereotypes, due to which he became one of the most important artists in the world.
Director Bryan Singer let up look through iconic songs such as ´We Will Rock You´, ´We are the Champions´ or ´Bohemian Rhapsody´ into their lives. The movie has a lightning start, continues through his unguided spiralling life and culminates by the memorable, riveting performance at Live Aid concert in 1985. Their music was and still is a tremendous inspiration for the whole world.
Marvel came up with its greatest ace that closes off a ten-year tradition of its work so far. Unfortunately, I do not like its being split into two parts. Yet the film brings onto the silver screen the most deadly, ultimate war of all time. Avengers and their superhero allies risk everything in their effort to beat the mighty Thanos before his lightning attack, accompanied by destruction and doom, destroying the universe once and for all.
I am not ashamed to say that in my opinion this is one of the best films of recent years. Extraordinarily made film about ordinary life. Thanks to the natural acting talent you get to absorbed in it, that it will seem to you as if you had lived through all the events yourself. Roma is a beautiful film about strong women and mothers who have to deal with adversity, whether in terms of love, courage, hopes, sadness or cruelty. Cuaron´s film was branded by the critics as the "film of the year" and not in vain was is called by the Time magazine as "the most beautiful and most touching film ever".
I do not know the book and the trailer did not capture my attention either, so if I had that as the only guidance, I certainly wouldn´t go to the cinema to see it. But the movie itself astonished me. It was a completely different league than I had thought. Steven Spielberg has not failed and again prove that he is one of filmmaking legends.
The plot is set in the year 2045, when the world finds itself on the brink of chaos and collapse. But people fould salvation in OASIS, a huge world of virtual reality created by brilliant and eccentric James Halliday. After his death he bequeaths his immense wealth to the first person who finds an Easter egg somewhere in the OASIS.
Although I have seen a lot of musicals, this one got me. An absolutely brilliant performance accentuated by the excellent singing of Bradlye Cooper who made this film as his first work. I was also amazed by the great acting performance of singer Lady Gaga. In addition to romance I was delighted also by the dramatic part of the film. Cooper plays in the film also country star Jackson Maine, who discovers an unknown talent, singer Ally (Lady Gaga).
When they plunge into a passionate relationship, Jack makes Ally to perform in the spotlight and catapults her to fame. But when Ally´s rocket start overshadows his own career, Jack finds it increasingly difficult to bear his retreat from the great stages and fights his inner demons.
