Cozy Dens

Often, we don´t even expect some “wow” surprise factor from Christmas films, nor novelty plot twists or unexpected turns. They make us happy by being the same year on year.

Which movies with Christmas theme dominated at our office? Which are the winners?

The first few places of our ranking were most frequently taken up by two luxury movies, and Love Actually. Then there appeared several movies on different scales, such as Home Alone, Devils are not to be Laughed at (a Czech fairy-tale, transl. note), or Cinderella.

Cozy Dens

For some a surprising choice, for others a must have. Cozy Dens must not miss during Christmas/Winter time on our television screens, that would be unforgivable. The spoon discussion is the best: Father Šebek - "Now, pay attention. These are not ordinary teaspoons. These are teaspoons made of plastic - light, flexible and elastic. These are teaspoons which were developed by researchers in GDR. (After a while all teaspoons melt in the hot coffee.) Father Kraus adds - I would just like to know where did comrades from GDR make a mistake. This film was made by Jan Hřebejk, in 1999.

Love Actually

Love Actually is about longing for love, going your own way and in the end to get it, not to leave anything to chance and, what is most important - not to leave anyone by themselves and alone. This film features stellar actors such as Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thopson, Bill Nighy and others. Love Actually was shot in 2003 by Director Richard Curtis.

Home Alone can still make us laugh

"I have the feeling that we have forgotten something important at home," says Mrs McCallister to her husband on board plane headed across the Atlantic to Paris. That´s the beginning of the most successful film of the year 1990, a Christmas comedy about a son who was left behind by mistake - and two clumsy thieves. Home Alone is simply a classic to which, though we know it by heart, we still like to go back to. The film was created in 1990, and was filmed by Chris Columbus

Devils are no laughing stock

You might not even know, but this fairy tale was shot in 1984, directed by Hynek Bočan according to fairy tale Devil´s Brother-in-Law, written by acclaimed Czech writer, Božena Němcová. Unforgettable roles were portrayed by Ondřej Vetchý in the role of devil ´Black Horse´ Janek, Vladimír Dlouhý in the role of Petr Máchal, Petr Nárožný, Jaroslava Kretchmerová and others. Who wouldn´t know the quotes that were completely transferred to colloquial Czech: "He is a rebel!", called out in exasperation by the corporal, and also, (when bullying the same private, demanding that he rebuilds a stack of wood after he made it fall - transl. note) "Perhaps it´s windy, Máchal”, also said sarcastically by the corporal.

Three Nuts for Cinderella

Did you, too, fall for the charm of luxury fairy-tale Three Nuts for Cinderella? We certainly did. It was shot in 1973 by director Václav Vorlíček, in co-production with Germany. Many of the scenes were shot here, such as the legendary luxury château of Moritzburg. We are really proud of it; it was participated in by many outstanding actors, from Libuše Šafránková, Pavel Trávníček, to singer Karel Gott who contributed by his singing voice.
