The luxurious show by HBO has been immensely successful. Game of Thrones is one of the most popular TV shows of the past years. And maybe one of the reasons it’s successful is that it’s often filmed in luxurious exteriors. Let’s take a tour of the luxurious locations where Game of Thrones is filmed.
Iceland is a frequent venue of various film and show shoots. Just like New Zealand, its scenery is magical and luxurious. Game of Thrones was filmed on the largest European glacier, Vatnajökull, located to the east of Reykjavik. In the show it appears as the world beyond the Wall.
The cast of Game of Thrones also visited Northern Ireland – specifically Castle Ward, which is used to depict the courtyard of Winterfell. Moreover, they also used a location called The Dark Hedges to depict the road leading from King’s Landing.
Scotland is also often used by movie-makers. It offers ample green areas and historical buildings – making it the perfect venue for a number of movies and shows. Shooting there must be luxurious indeed! In the pilot of Game of Thrones, the first shots of Winterfell, the seat of the Starks, were in fact those of Doune Castle near the town of Doune, Stirling.
Naturally, Spain and its rich history have a lot to offer for TV shows like Game of Thrones! Most of the shooting was done in a natural reserve called Bardenas Reales, a desert landscape covered with numerous rock formations. It is located near the town of Tudela, in the province of Navarra on the north-east of Spain. The show was shot in a castle called Santa Florentina, dating back to the 11th century. The castle is located to the north of Barcelona and represented the seat of House Tarly in the sixth season.
