Helix Bridge and Marina Bay

Anybody who loves timeless design, elegance, precision and style that exceeds the present simply must visit Singapore. And take a walk across Helix Bridge! This luxurious bridge is only for pedestrians and it is particularly special at night when it shines. Indeed, it is capable of inciting a perfect vision of the future!

One of the most remarkable futuristic bridges

The shape of the luxurious Helix Bridge is inspired by the DNA helix, from which its name originates. Hence, the shape comes as no surprise. This unique architectural masterpiece, which was designed by the renowned Australian architectural firm Cox Architecture, was completed and opened in 2010. It crosses the Singapore River and connects Marina Centre and Marina South. Its luxurious design is amazing, strongly futuristic and at night it looks like the passageway to an unknown, higher dimension.

Perfect night-time play of colour and light

The lighting of Helix Bridge was created by Arup, which really knows how to play around with light sources. The bridge is equipped with countless LED lights in various colours pointed in various directions, so that pedestrians can see at night, while simultaneously making the structure look truly unique and timeless. White light placed on the inner side of the helix serves to light the way for pedestrians. The other coloured lights point in and out and create an integral light membrane. The glass openings in the floor create a unique connection with the water below. Panoramic views are provided by 4 piers which jut out of the helix into the space above the water.

In 2006, the committee chose this design from a total of 36 proposals. The concept consisted of curving the bridge into an arch that connects seamlessly to the promenades leading along both sides of the riverbank. The luxurious bridge is 280 metres long and is one of the landmarks of modern Singapore.

Invalidovna

Kaizlovy Sady Park serves for relaxation and rest, and the adjacent Invalidovna building stands there abandoned and devoid of interest, despite being in sight. The situation will change at least during the Open House Prague festival. Take a look at this unique luxurious building on 19 – 20 May.

Home for war veterans

Invalidovna is one of the oldest buildings in this part of Prague. Its construction began in 1732 to meet the needs of war veterans. The idea was presented by Count Petr Strozzi, who also served in the war and was only too familiar with the suffering of a helpless and injured soldier.

It was originally intended to be a vast complex for 4000 war veterans. After five years, however, the money ran out and construction was suspended. In the early years, 200 people were accommodated year, but in 1874 this number rose to 1400. The luxurious villa also served as the headquarters of the Military Official Archive.

Younger sister of the Paris Invalidovna

The Invalidovna in Karlín was built based on the template of the Hotel des Invalides in Paris, the construction of which began in 1670 at the request of the French “Sun King” Louis XIV. It now hoses an army museum and hospital. The adjacent cemetery of famous French military commanders, where the body of Napoleon Bonaparte rests in peace, is also very popular. While the luxurious Paris Invalidovna is full of life, the Prague building lies empty. For now.

The current technical condition of Invalidovna in Karlín is very poor. Since last year, it has been protected as a natural cultural monument of the Czech Republic. In the future, it is expected to serve as a meeting place for people and a venue for various cultural events.

Unique opportunity to visit the villa in May

For minimally two days this year (19 – 20 May) the doors of Invalidovna will be opened to the public within the Open House Prague project. Visitors will thus be able to view this luxurious work by Kilián Ignác Dietzenhofer from the inside and outside, and admire the beautiful historical project.
