French designer Christian Dior loved fortune-telling. He'd met many visionary figures in his life, and one of them had basically predicted the following: "It will be extraordinary. Your house will cause a revolution in fashion!”. That, as we know today, has indeed happened. Mystical and mysterious is also the latest haute couture collection Spring 2021, which was created under the baton of talented Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiuri.
This season, the House of Dior draws inspiration from the Visconti-Sforza tarot deck, created at the end of the 15th century by the painter Bonifacio Bembo for the Dukes of Milan. The collection, which combines the past with the present, was presented with the help of a fifteen-minute short film directed by Matteo Garrone. In the film, the viewer is invited to a castle inhabited by characters who question, disorient and challenge him to start looking at the world from a new perspective. In the director's depiction, this task transcends gender boundaries and represents a connection between the male and female worlds. On top of that, the gender boundary has been crossed by the outfits themselves. Maria Grazia Chiuri introduces seductive female outfits in combination with minimalist men's style.
Tarot is a key to a magical realm, a way to explore the unknown of the depths of your own self. The haute couture collection Spring 2021 also reflects this. It is full of experimentation and endless possibilities. Would you like to deck yourself in elegant tweed on the first day, in tender cashmere or organza on the second, and in mysterious black velvet on the next one? It was black velvet that was used for the iconic Dior Bar Jacket, which is cut to express a new view of the world.
The collection features several outfits that prove that Maria Grazia Chiuri is the right woman for the job. Precise handwork, the choice of the most luxurious materials, and non-traditional cuts make these garments a work of art. The cherry on top is the footwear, which literally makes a revolutionary impression in combination with fine organza and other transparent materials. So, are you ready to rise up?!
Whenever I get a chance to evaluate a collection designed by Dior, I know in advance that it will not be a complete disaster and I won't have as much fun as usual, because the Italian Maria Grazia Chiuri simply knows what she's doing. I wish this could be said about other designers as well.
I myself am not one of the fools obsessed with esoteric subjects, but I like to read horoscopes, let me tell you. That's why I'm really happy that the haute couture collection is inspired by tarot, which adds the right mystical touch to the whole thing. What's more, when I watched the accompanying fifteen-minute video, which includes a sexy female make-out scene, I realized that Maria Grazia Chiuri had overcome herself again. Even so, there are a few pieces that aren't that good...
This dress is divine! There's really nothing I can criticize. I like that it is mystical and sexy at the same time. Here, Maria has hit the bull's eye with the choice of color, material, and all the details. The golden reflections are amazing and I can already see myself riding a horse wearing the dress and the endless train will follow me seductively.
Ha, this gown has many advantages! When you look in the mirror, not only you will feel like a queen who owns at least three palaces and a castle, but you will also lose the post-Christmas… well, the year-round extra weight.
I don't mind, but compared to other ladies, this one looks homeless or like a stable girl, and she doesn't even have a horse! Anthracite and black are great, but the whole effort was killed by the cut of the dress and the slightly sulky expression of the model. In my opinion, she is well aware that she's got the worst of the outfits and this is the subsequent revenge on Dior.
The first thing that occurred to me when I saw the photo was: what is the poor girl gonna do when she'll need to quickly find chewing gum or a mirror in her purse? At first, she will have to break her hands out from inside of the outfit. The world in which we live is already quite hurried, no one wants to lose time by looking for one's own limbs. This is a serious misstep. You can tell that Maria, unlike other mortals, probably has a lot of time to spare.
So, had the model suffered a chest injury before taking the photo, eaten a hot dog, and made a mess, or is this the highest form of art? I'm getting a little lost. However, we know one thing for sure. I'll leave this dress for you.
To sum it all up, Dior has pleasantly surprised me again and I'm looking forward to seeing what the brand comes up with next!
