For over 40 years it has held the title of the world’s tallest building.
It all began in 1930 with the construction itself and a year later the building was completed. The interesting thing is that the skyscraper was built in record time, exactly 1 year and 45 days. The construction workers were able to build a reasonable 4 floors in a week, but they already had pre-prepared manufactured parts that they then assembled.
The building was given an unusual nickname – “The Empty State Building”. This name is a result of America’s historical economic situation of that time, which was defined as bankrupt on the New York Stock Exchange, and there was absolutely no interest in the renting of the building. The Empire State Building was saved by its viewing platforms, which provided previously unprecedented views of Manhattan. This experience is absolutely unforgettable, with the supposition of clear weather being visible to up to 80 km. To date, over 120 million people have visited the building.
This inseparable landmark of New York can be seen at the corners of Fifth Avenue and 34th West Street, where at one time the Waldorf Astoria stood and was recognised as being the most expensive luxury hotel in the world. Due to the construction of the Empire State Building, the hotel was moved to Park Avenue in 1929, where it can be found till today. The construction of the elegant luxury art-deco skyscraper, typical of the time, from granite and limestone, could now begin.
60,000 tons of steel, 97 km of piping and over 30,000 square metres of marble were used for the construction. The total volume of the skyscraper is calculated at cca. 1 million cubic metres, and if you count the stairs from the ground floor to the top floor, you will reach the number 1860.
The architectural design derives from the pen of Architect William F. Lamb of the Shreve, Lamb and Harmon architectural studio. The original design featured only an 80-storey building, but after the planned height for the Chrysler Building was increased, the height of the luxurious Empire State Building also had to be raised.
