Vinohrady Pavilion: Design Has Found A Home
The marketplace on Tylovo náměstí in the district of Královské Vinohrady was operation from 1879. Over time, as the city section developed, a larger and more modern space was required, giving way to the reconstruction of a former factory for milling machines into a modern, industrial-style building in 1903. The reconstruction was managed by architect Antonín Turek, whose designs were used to build a modern market hall in Neo-renaissance style with 98 stands.
Transformation from market hall to design centre
The building is listed in the National List of Cultural Landmarks. In the 1990's it underwent reconstruction based on a project by architects Jan Vrána and Vladimír Štulc. The unique building won the 1995 competition of shopping centres in Prague. This was followed by an unwanted decline. In short, the shopping centre was unable to withstand the strong competition from countless new modern luxury shopping malls. The situation changed only with the arrival of businessman Martin Leitgeb, director of Stokist.
He purchased the facility in 2012 and ceremoniously reopened it on 10 October 2013. Bára Škorpilová from Mimolimit studio participated in its transformation into a luxury building. Since then, the premises serve to present Czech and foreign design.
Luxury interiors under one roof
The building with an area of 2,500 m² is home to furniture and designer products from global brands such as Fritz Hansen, Desalto, Lema, Zeitraum, Montis, Magis, Flou and Vitra. Czech brands like Lugi and Lavmi are also showcased.
Another shop that founds its place here is Modernista, which mainly offers furniture from the 1st half of the 20th Century.
It is a place full of shops with furniture, lighting, carpets, audio-visual equipment, flooring materials and a florist studio. The famous Czech brand of hand-made bicycles, Favorit, has a showroom hear. The building also houses the Pavilon Gallery.
Vinohrady industrial design
The monumental structure has preserved its original steel structure and historical elements. The building is exceptional with its open, airy space, filled with light from the uncovered windows. The pavilion’s luxury tiling was designed by Patricia Urquiola. The open space of the La Boheme Café is equally unique.
The Pavilion has also hosted the popular Designblok fair and won the prestigious award as Czech Grand Design Store of the Year 2013.
