The dramatic western Sweet Country will premier in the Czech Republic within the terms of the 53rd IFF Karlovy Vary, and will subsequently be screened in cinemas from 2nd August.
Sweet Country is a period western taking place in central Australia. It contains everything that belongs to this genre – border country, confiscation of land, the submission and subjugation of a people and monumental shots of the landscape. It is inspired by actual events. It was filmed in the desert of the deluxe MacDonnell Mountains in the Alice Springs region in central Australia at the end of 2016.
This deluxe film is based on the true story of a native man called Wilabert Jack, who was arrested and tried for the murder of a white man in the Australian interior in the nineteen twenties. He was eventually found not guilty because he committed the act in self-defence. In the political climate of that time the white public did not accept this verdict and Wilabert Jack was lynched. In this film the character of Sam (Sam Neil) represents Wilabert Jack.
The film was directed by Warwick Thornton. Sweet Country has already won 6 awards and been nominated 10 times at prestigious film festivals. This includes the prestigious Jury Award at the Film Festival in Venice 2017. Excellent actors can be seen in this film. The deluxe cast consists of names such as Sam Neil, Bryan Brown, Ewen Leslie, Thomas M. Wright, Madd Day, Hamilton Morris, Natassia Gorey Furber and others. The screenplay is the work of David Tranter and Steven McGregor who wrote an authentic storey of a world that is as brutal as it is sentimental.
I had the unique opportunity to see the pre-premiere of this film and I must say that the efforts of the film’s creators, to pull you into a world where two different cultures clash and to experience the challenges that the occupied people face, works excellently here. This deluxe film is certainly worth seeing!
