Georgia is one of the republics of the former Soviet Union. If you don´t know Cyrillic and Russian, you may have a bit of a problem with communication. But if you have some cash rattling around in your pocket, it will all turn out well. Tourism in Georgia is in phase of "initial development". You can therefore count on authentic atmosphere, but high prices too. Especially in tourist centres, in winter undoubtedly also the ski resort of Gudauri.
Although it lies about 80 km outside of Tbilisi, you will be driving to get there for 2 hours. And on the way you may have to change the wheel. Gudauri is a modern resort that lies at a height of approximately 2,000 metres above sea level, skiing is at a height of 3,200 meters. Ski slopes are wide and prepared, you will also find refreshment bars, only the prices are about a third more expensive than in the capital.
The accommodation in the area is not exactly cheap either. Here, you will find several luxury hotels as well as cheaper hostels. The prices here are set higher due to their low capacity. That is where there young people who travel to Georgia for a free ride are accommodated most often. Free rides, heli skiing and paragliding here attracts enthusiasts from all over Europe because of the beautiful environment and lower prices than in Europe. However, the main visitors here are wealthy Russians.
The Caucasus is the majestic mountain range on the border of Georgia and Russia and also Asia and Europe. You will feel the power of this unique giant mountain range from the first moment when you arrive at the centre. Here you may experience very cold weather indeed, take into account that you may get temperatures of -25°C.
Gudauri is one of the smaller centres, which has approximately 50 km of skiing slopes. If you get to spend here more than a week, you may perhaps get a little bored after some time. Therefore try and devote some attention to the capital. Tbilisi is a stunning place with raw atmosphere and friendly people.
You can visit a spa here, similar to the Turkish ones or taste the local specialities. The Georgian cuisine is very rich. It consists of variously spiced and seasoned minced meat and salads. Order the stuffed chinkali dumplings or chaccapuri patties. And you must certainly taste the renowned Georgian wines and local cognac. You decide if it is as good as the Frech one!
