First Knight, Dragon Heart, Indiana Jones, Murder on the Orient Express or Anna Karenina. The charismatic Scottish actor has achieved a lot in his life. But his real breakthrough was the portrayal of James Bond. He introduced himself to the audience in seven spy thrillers.
Thomas Sean Connery was born in Edinburgh in 1930. He has never been one of the best students. He left school at the age of 13 and joined the navy three years later. Due to health problems, however, he didn't stay there long. He made his living by any means he could - driving trucks, working as a lifeguard and posing as a model at Edinburgh College of Art. Artist Richard Demarco, who often painted Connery when he was a student, described him as "too beautiful for words."
Connery also played football from an early age and he was pretty good at it! Manchester United even offered him a contract, which he refused. While working in the theater, he discovered his love for the stage, and the passion that would fuel his entire career was born. It was, as he later said,
He started his acting career in 1954 with the film Lilacs in the Spring. Gradually, smaller roles in TV shows began to appear.
In 1957, he got his first lead role in the film Blood Money, where he played a boxer. A year later, he appeared alongside American actress Lana Turner in the successful drama Another Time, Another Place.
And then everything changed. Producers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman acquired the rights to bring Ian Fleming's novels on cinema screens, and they were looking for an actor to play the Agent 007. Connery's portrayal had a certain sarcastic wit and it was unique. But the critics weren't too enthusiastic about it. The public, however, didn't share their opinion, and Connery's stellar career took off.
Sean Connery won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in The Untouchables. He also received two BAFTA awards and three Golden Globes. The actor, once voted the "greatest living Scot", died in his sleep on October 31, during his stay in the Bahamas. He lived to be 90 years old.
