On Tuesday, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced sshortlisted nominations for the upcoming Oscars. The Czech film Charlatan by director Agnieszka Hollandová with Ivan Trojan in the lead role made it among the fifteen best international films. The Academy published shortlisted nominations in nine categories.

Also on the list are the Danish film Another Round or the Guatemalan horror film The Curse of La Llorona. The Czech Film and Television Academy chose the movie Charlatan, inspired by the fate of the healer Jan Mikolášek, to fight for an Oscar. The main role was portrayed by Ivan Trojan and his son Josef.

"We had each studied it on our own for a long time, because we'd both felt this initial shyness, in a good way. When the shooting started, we always got stuck somewhere, for example in the kitchen, and talked about it,"

Josef Trojan described how he and his father had been preparing for the role. So far, Oscars for foreign language film have gone to The Shop on Main Street and Closely Watched Trains in the 1960s, and to Kolja directed by Jan Svěrák in the 1990s.

The unemployment rate in South Korea was the highest in 21 years in January. It jumped to 5.4%, which is the highest peak since 1999, according to Korean statistics. The number of employees decreased by 982 thousand compared to the previous year.

These data are another blow dealt by the coronavirus to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and a heavy one at that, seeing as it has hit his party shortly before the April elections, in which people will choose the mayors of the two largest cities - Seoul and Busan.

"Strenghtened measures that reamained in place to suppress the third wave of COVID-19 have led to job losses, in particular in the services sector,"

the Ministry of Finance said in its statement after the data had been published. The statistics showed that the workers most affected were those employed in retailer shops, accommodation services and restaurants, who lost 586,000 jobs last year.

Experts from China and the World Health Organization (WHO) have so far failed to discover the origin of the new type of coronavirus that had caused the Covid-19 pandemic. Specialists have been looking for it in recent days in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the infection was first recorded in late 2019. At a press conference, WHO team leader Peter Ben Embarek stated that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was likely to be of natural origin and may have been hosted by bats initially. It is highly unlikely that the virus escaped from the laboratory, Embarek added.

The coronavirus probably spread to humans via intermediate hosts. A year ago, Chinese experts mentioned the possibility that the new type of coronavirus may have spread to humans from bats through legumes. Protected legumes are hunted for meat, which is considered a delicacy in countries like China, and fot their scales, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a variety of diseases, from cancer to arthritis.

"The fact that minks and cats are also easily infected with SARS-CoV-2 suggests that other animals may be reservoirs. However, research to date is insufficient,"

said Liang Wan-nien, a representative of the Chinese National Health Commission. At the same time, China is trying to avoid allegations that they had initially concealed the discovery of the new type of coronavirus, causing the infection to spread.

That's all for now, we wish you a pleasant waking up. And don't let your failures trouble you today, because as Mahatma Gandhi said:

"To do what we fear is the first step to success."
