The Old Town in the heart of Prague offers many interesting corners. One of them is the Municipal Court, which has recently undergone a complete renovation. If you wish to visit this place, you will have a chance within the framework of Open House Prague festival in May.
Open House Prague opens interesting building on an annual basis, to make the capital city really proud. Visitors may thus see places which are normally inaccessible. From the wide list we have this time chosen the Municipal Court, which will delight both lovers of history as well as modern architecture.
Municipal Court in Josefov near St Anna Cloister has a long history. It is architecturally very valuable complex where original stood farm outbuildings. Thanks to the fact that the buildings here were constructed from the 15th to the 19th century, you can meet with several styles, such as baroque, classicism and gothic style.
You may perhaps recall the place better if we tell you that it was the very Municipal Court that represented Foglar´s Stínadla from his book, Rychlé Šípy (Fast Arrows). But the dark atmosphere cannot be found any longer.
If you come nowadays, you will be surprised by the luxurious space with three renovated historical buildings and one just newly constructed. In-between all of them there is a magnificent yard full of greenery, intended purely for residents.
The Municipal Court was in its original form used to house horses and coaches that had been the property of the Old City of Prague. Also, hay and coal were stared here. At the beginning of the twentieth century a central fire station was established here. The carried out demolitions on the turn of the 19th and 20th century in Joseph badly affected the Municipal Court too, and nobody was interested in the place. At the time of the Protectorate it served as a place of garages for ambulances and at the end of the twentieth century the court was used by Prague services.
Now you can find here modern luxurious apartments and the whole historic complex is dominated by an ultra-modern building by Spanish architect, Ricardo Bofill. It is a very minimalist grey cuboid with a decoration resembling branches. In it you will find luxurious apartments and garages, the roof serves as a huge, stunning wooden terrace.
