In his new FW2021 menswear collection, designer Virgil Abloh sets out to explore the unconscious stereotypes, planted in our minds by archaic societal norms.
Louis Vuitton’s latest collection takes place between the city of Paris and a mountain village in Switzerland. This multidisciplinary art show, expressed through poetry, music and dance is based on „Stranger in the Village“ – a 1953 essay from an African-American writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin. Therefore, what seems to be a collection of crazy ideas at first glance is actually another attempt in changing the mindset of the society we live in.
The FW2021 collection gives off kind of a schizophrenic vibe. Without looking into its roots, you may even think Louis Vuitton’s creative director Virgil Abloh has lost his mind completely, as he brings about a parade of archetypal figures including a hobo and a hotelier, an art gallery owner and an artist, an architect, a student, an athlete and many, many more. Yet there’s a strong single idea behind all this: our society judges a book by its cover way too often, be it our clothes, our hairstyle or the colour of our skin.
Fighting these stereotypes is all the FW2021 collection strives for. The result is a cultural melting pot adorned with a compilation of colours, skirts, man purses for both travel and everyday wear, flowers or the iconic Louis Vuitton Monogram motif.

The power of minimalism and all-time classics
Looking at this collection, the first thing you’ll see is the clash of luxurious elegance and relaxed streetwear style. Here at LP-life.com, our fashion editors' choice would clearly be the long, bright red coat combined with a sensible carryall, button-up shirt and tie and shiny black footwear. Less really is more sometimes.
Another look worth mentioning is the timeless pinstripe suit that you cannot go wrong with. Just grab a cup of coffee-to-go, your favourite newspaper and off to a meeting you go!

Louis Vuitton went nuts! Natali Ruden would tear him apart
First few looks of this collection really made me believe this would be complete eye candy with nothing to complain about. I remember thinking to myself „great, designers finally went off whatever drugs they had been taking, here comes some nice, wearable clothing that I can pick something out of for my SO to stop looking like a redneck in the office.“ Well... not really.
Sorting the grain from the chaff

At first glance, there’s beauty, clean lines, simply perfection. Never mind the red colour – at least we’ll sort the fashion grain from the chaff. But what about the bag? What about that plushy rubbish hanging from it? A guy dressed like this could make me do any sort of business with him, but the moment I’d see these toys, I’m out.

Once again I’m not sure if this model is a he or a she. In this case not only because of their hair, but mainly due to that dress and leather gloves. And even if I somehow could look past that and turn both blind eyes, what’s with that bag? It’s the exact same thing I carry for my Lidl grocery runs! At least it’s pretty sturdy, gotta admit that. As for the cowboy hat, I’ll consider that a no comment.

Here we go again with the bag, only this time we’re heading to Billa. And still, it’s less irritating to look at than that plasticky suit. I’m just aching to touch this guy. Surely this can‘t be the nicest thing to wear, but at least it’s practical, I guess. It may be raining cats and dogs, and he’d still be all dry. And if he feels like throwing a proper toddler-style tantrum on his way to the office, he can roll in every puddle around without a single worry about staining his duds.

New York, the City That Never Sleeps. If you love it, why won’t you wear it on your sleeve... or your chest, for that matter. Same goes for other destinations, of course. This might be a cooler way of remembering your travels than hoarding fridge magnets, but in no way could it be practical.

When designer Natali Ruden sees this, she’s gonna flip her lid! As she told LP-life.com, she disapproves of athleisure absolutely. And I can’t but agree with her. Sweats are sweats, wear them at home. Or even better, nowhere at all. Even though this look is actually sorta elegant, who the heck said you should feel comfortable in the office?

Okay, this is great. Perfect fitting suit? Check. Fox fur? Check. I just hope it’s fake, or else would PETA throw a fit. Since this gangsta can’t probably afford his own private plane, he carries it around in the form of a purse. Classy!
