Every time we remember the beginnings of Sonia Rykiel, we continue to be amazed at how far she has managed to go. How much has the direction, which the brand chose to take, changed over the years, is also demonstrated by the SS19 collection, which is full of devilish cuts. Nevertheless, the latest development of the fashion house leaves us slightly hesitant.
The luxury brand has revealed the trend of the next season, which is crocheting. So, if you belong to fervent supporters of this hobby, perhaps you already know how you will spend your time in the coming months and at weekends - by creating hot trends of SS19. For all others who don´t really have a penchant for this activity, there is a new collection of Sonia Rykiel, for whom crocheted pieces became the alpha and omega.
The checked pattern presented by the luxury brand at the Paris Fashion week last year, has been swapped for stripes and minimalist models of one or two colours. Even this time round, Sonia Rykiel offers casual, careless elegance. However, in comparison with the luxury SS18 collection, the current one is rather a disappointment to us.
While the last year´s collection in our eyes glorified the beauty of a female body, this year´s one represents moderation and to some extent suppression of femininity. There is no trace of the past dazzling sparkle, seductive miniskirts or transparent lace, which is a great pity.
Despite that we enjoy the stylish coats of SS19, playful tassels or some perfectly turned-out luxurious pieces. The latter include inter alia a snow-white, hooded overall with bare shoulders or the stylish, and the only mini dress in the collection with a trendy print.
The Sonia Rykiel fashion house has never been one of my core favourites. Perhaps this is because quite ordinary pieces here pretend to be something extraordinary. Ordinary black bell-bottom trousers here for example cost CZK 16,500. Sorry, but it is not as if this idea was invented by Sonia, or her current team! And this is no Hugo Boss, is it?
I went through the SS19 collection in detail, to see whether I could find at least one positive sun ray in that plethora of crocheted nonsense. Finally, my choice would be the white oversize sweater and skirt composed of fringes and a geometrically punched fabric. Yes, for a beach lunch somewhere on holiday this would be a super choice. But, for example at work, the tassels would put me off after a while...
The rest is a kind of mix lacking any kind of firm foundation. First of all, there are those knitted garments and various throws, then the giant denim jacket, Japanese corsets and finally the silk lacy dress reminiscent of a typical nightie. In short, a complete chaos which I really don´t need.
The “positive sun ray” of this collection according to Ornella may be found at the beginning of the photo gallery below the article.
