A month after two oil tankers were seriously damaged in the Black Sea, a large oil spill is spreading in the Kerch Strait, which separates Russia from the annexed Crimea. The oil leaked into the strait from two ships, which got into trouble on December 15th during bad weather. Volgoneft-239 ran aground after a storm, while Volgoneft-212 sank.
Now up to 5,000 tons of oil have leaked, and according to media reports and official statements analyzed by BBC Verify, the leak has spread throughout the Black and Azov Seas. Senior Russian scientist Viktor Danilov has dubbed the leak the worst "environmental disaster" in the country in the 21st century.
