Vinohrady

The History of the District

The name itself refers to the emergence of viticulture. At the instigation of Emperor Charles IV the southwestern slopes behind the gates of the City above the Horse Market were planted with wine. During the 18th Century, the vineyards were abandoned and the area was built-up by buildings and estates. At the beginning of the 19th Century, efforts were made to preserve the beauty of the place and Wimmer’s fruit tree and rose orchards were established. Another significant change occurred in 1849, when a separate municipality came into existence and a building boom arrived. In 1875 the municipality was divided into Královské Vinohrady and Žižkov. After 1960, Královské Vinohrady is referred to only as Vinohrady.

In the 1920’s the municipality became a part of Great Prague and over time it was divided into smaller units pertaining to Prague 2, 3 and 10 districts.

The transformation of the district

The beautification of Vinohrady has taken place gradually since the end of the 19th Century, when paving of the roads commenced. The 19th Century brought about the building of the Theatre in Vinohrady, the first permanent cinema and in the 1970’s the district was connected to the metro (A line).

The lure of Vinohrady

The centre of Vinohrady comprises Náměstí Míru, Vinohradská třída and the park of Riegrovy sady (with the Rajská zahrada connected towards Žižkov).

There are 2 theatres in the Vinohrady area (the Smetana Theatre and the Theatre in Vinohrady), the Main Railway Station and Czech Radio. In addition to this uniqueness, you can enjoy views of historical buildings, such as the luxurious Měšťanský brewery that was founded in 1893 or the University Hospital Královské Vinohrady (which bears the original name of the village).

From amongst the private luxury houses and villas, you can admire the Twin House of the Čapek Brothers, Šaloun’s Villa or Osvěta Villa, the birthplace of Jan Masaryk.

Prague has many luxurious districts, although they are a luxury from the historical point of view. They are reminders of the time of its beauty. However, many places shine with the originality of modern times with all the conveniences and trendy brands. So you can choose between becoming a quiet observer of history or being an enthusiastic consumer of the 21st Century.
