Karlovy Vary: From the film festival straight to the cinema

At the ceremony at which all the winners were unveiled it was a Czech film that won for the first time in fifteen years. Which other films received awards and when will we be able to see them in Czech cinemas?

After fifteen years, a Czech film is the winner!

The main competition of the Karlovy Vary Festival after 15 years has a Czech winner. Václav Kadrnka’s luxurious drama about fatherhood entitled “Little Crusader” was awarded a 25,000-dollar prize together with the Crystal Globe for the Best Film of this year.

The Special Jury Prize was awarded to the Yugoslav War Drama entitled Men Don't Cry.

Peter Bebjak won the prize for his direction of the film Line.

Awards for female performances were won by Jowita Budnik and Elian Umuhire for a luxurious drama entitled The Birds are singing in Kigali.

The Russian actor Alexandr Jacenko was chosen as Best Actor for his role in the Russian film Arrhythmia as a doctor.

The Special Award for best debut went to the American romance entitled Keep the Change and the Best Debut Actress Award went to Romanian Voica Oltean for Breaking News.

A road movie entitled How Viktor “the Garlic” Took Alexey “the Stud” to the Nursing Home directed by the Russian Alexander Hant was successful in the East of the West Category.

The Special Jury Prize was awarded to the film by Mariam Khatchvanien entitled Dede.

The prize for the best feature documentary film went to the Spanish film Lots of Kids, a Monkey and a Castle by Gustavo Salmerón.

The Audience Award was won by the American drama Wind River featuring Jeremy Renner in the lead role, who, during the closing ceremony also took over the Award of the President of the Festival from Jiří Bartoška, which was also won by the Czech Director Václav Vorlíček.

During July the films from the festival will be featured in Cinemas

From the 13th of July most of the films will go to regular Czech Cinemas, including the luxurious opening comedy Pretty Bad together with the German film Axolotl Overkill and the new film by Francois Ozon Double Lover. There will also be a documentary by Vita Klusák entitled The White World According to Daliborek, Fallen, the drama of Sofia Coppola, the film Life For Life, the action movie entitled Baby Driver and also The Other Side of Hope,Aki Kaurismäki’s new film .

Which movies will you be able enjoy in cinemas in August?

During the second half of the holidays, both Little Crusader and the Slovakian film Line will come to cinemas and in addition the thriller entitled Good Times with Robert Pattinson. In September, you will be able to enjoy the documentary Red and many other films such as In the Fade, Let the Sunshine In, Happy End, Paula, Jupiter's Moon, The Distinguished Citizen Western and Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc.

The 52nd Karlovy Vary IFF in figures

There were 13,734 accredited visitors - of whom 11,554 were there with festival passports, 398 were filmmakers, 1165 were film professionals and 617 were journalists.

505 film performances took place.

A total of 140,067 tickets were sold.

A total of 207 films were featured there.

Next year, in 2018, the 53rd Karlovy Vary IFF will take place from the 29th June till the 7th July 2018 and it will certainly be another luxurious spectacle!
