The prestigious presentation of the deluxe Anděl 2017 Awards is finally a mark of quality according to the nominees. All the nominees and winners came to the Karlín Forum this year.
Four nominations, four awards. The J.A.R. band became the band of the year and also won its nomination for song of the year with its song “Zhubni” and its nomination of album of the year. According to band frontman Roman Holý, the band can serve as an example to all artists.
The Anděl Awards are music awards presented by the Czech Academy of Music and have been presented since 1991. The genre and major prizes were merged into one event in 2017 with awards being presented in the categories: Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Band of the Year, Female Solo Singer and Male Solo Singer of the year, Discovery of the Year, Video of the Year, Hall of Fame, Folk, Jazz, Electronic and Alternative music. The Czech Academy of Music and the CAM special genre academies choose the winners – juries consist of experts in contemporary Czech music.
The deluxe evening, which was broadcast live by Czech Television, was moderated by Libor Bouček. The evening also included several music performances, which the organisers spiced up this year with unusual music combinations and performances by the nominees. As a result the favourites J.A.R. and Mirai, each with four nominations, performed musical interludes. Followed by David Stypka, with three nominations, who performed the song Dobré ráno, milá with singer Ewa Farná. Guests were also able to enjoy a performance by singers Barbora Poláková and Anna K.
The main event of this deluxe evening, apart from presentation of the prizes, was in honour of late singer Wabi Daněk in the form of Rosa na Kolejích. The programme immediately in front of the Karlín Forum, which the organisers prepared free of charge for the general public, was also unique and deluxe. Mydy Rabycad, Pokáč, Kapitán Demo and Wild tides, VR/Nobody and hiphoppers Paulie Garand and Kenny Rough all performed on the 2nd stage.
The Czech Academy of Music also inducted folk singer Vladimír Merta into the Hall of Fame. Merta sang a song about fallen angels during the ceremony, which contained words about murders on the path to power – “Mr Putin, Mr Babiš, Mr Zeman, you are fallen angels”.
Czech Miss 2017 Michaela Habáňová, and singers Ondřej Hejma, Adam Mišík, Pavel Calta and Marek Ztracený also attended the ceremonial evening. Singers Marie Rottrová, Jitka Zelenková and producer Janis Sidovský walked the red carpet. “Everything is really high-quality, which the Anděl Awards and its winners undoubtedly deserve,” said singer Adam Mišík.
The Czech Academy of Music consists of the major academy and the specialist CAM sections for voting in individual genre categories. The major academy votes for the winners of the basic and personality categories using a one-point system – always selecting one performer within the terms of a specific category. Voting takes place over two rounds. In the first round academics award one point each to a total of three selected candidates in each category (i.e. potentially occupying three nominee positions for the second round of voting) and add a performer or project from any category that should be included in their opinion. In the second round of voting all academics have only one vote or winning name in each category. The individual CAM genre sub-sections, which are the previously mentioned genre academies consisting of experts in the specific music genres, explicitly vote in the genre categories. The first round of voting always results in five nominees, who subsequently progress to the second round of voting. In the event that some nominees receive the same amount of votes after the first round, the chairman of the section decides on the nominations.
