The famous Golden Gate Bridge is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular bridges on the American continent. It is also one of the most photographed attractions and unfortunately also one of the most sought-after ones by suicides. It is definitely worth attention, if only because it is the main symbol of San Francisco!
Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco and Marin Country. Because it is a place with a frequent occurrence of earthquakes and bad weather conditions, the construction of the luxurious bridge was to many people just madness and for a long time its construction was being delayed. In 1933 however, developer Joseph Strauss took the project on and only 4 years later cars were already racing alongside it. Its length is 2.7 km, it weighs 887,000 tonnes and the two towers are held together by 600,000 rivets.
The bridge got its name from the strait, across which it is built - Golden Gate. Nevertheless the plan was to crown the construction by using real gold!
The last rivet used in the construction was to be made of pure gold, to reaffirm the name of the bridge. However, fate and in particular the characteristics of the luxurious material prevented this. Gold is too soft, that is why this exclusive rivet flew out of the construction and was lost somewhere in the sea.
Strauss was advised with the construction by Irving Morrow who gave the bridge its legendary form. There are luxurious designs of lamps and especially the unmistakeable patented Deluxe International Orange colour, which even the locals do not wish to change under any circumstances.
The sad aspect of this luxurious building is the attention paid by suicide killers who choose the Golden Gate Bridge as the place of the last few seconds of their life. Instead of a safety net (which is being considered) there are several telephones located on the bridge which serve as a means to deal with crisis situations. But more than 1,600 people have already terminated their life here.
