Autumn is a season when nature paints the leaves in marvelours colors but, unfortunately, it is also the major flu season. Some of us, once hit by the first symptoms of cold, storm the pharmacy and are willing to leave a few hundred poorer, if it means they might be able to prevent succumbing to the disease completely. But there are also those who, even in this day and age, swear by natural treatment and bet on the tried and proven practises of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers. We bring you some practical advice regarding methods that used to work for our ancestors. What kind of "hacks" and tricks are these?

It is commonly known that in the times of our ancestors, "meds used to grow" just outside the windows. Thanks to that, people drew inspiration from their gardens, where they planted mostly onions, garlic, horseradish and various types of herbs.

Onions are a must!

Many of us cannot do without them in the kitchen. We use onions as a basis for almost all types of sauces or soups. Already in our childhood, we kept hearing that onions are a cure for any illness. Back then, people were already aware that onions contained a number of vitamins, namely C, D, E, B, and many other beneficial substances. It is also a source of iron, potassium and can relieve swelling from insect bites.

Onion compresses can rid you of mucus in the easiest of ways. If you put heated onion rings in a cotton scarf and place this compress on your chest, having previously rubbed lard or marigold ointment on your skin, you're golden.

Our grandmothers also often made so-called onion juice to treat cough and get rid of mucus. Yes, the resulting taste of this natural medicine is by far not something you'd wish to taste again, but it will guarantee you a faster recovery, which is always a priority. If you sprinkle chopped onion with honey and cover it, it will release juice after a while. An ill person should take a bit several times a day. The effect of grated horseradish is equally potent, when mixed with honey, and it is a guaranteed boost for your immunity.

Just like black tea with ginger and honey, chicken soup is very helpful during the flu season. A tasty, strong broth will help your weakened organism get rid of harmful substances present in your body.

The battle against the flu or cold usually lasts several days and can make your life very unpleasant. If you want to be able to avoid any of the symptoms of the disease at all, you'd better remember it's important to support your immune system with frequent intake of vitamins and a healthy diet.
