Ordinary apartment block? Far from! It’s the winner of an architectural award!

The Mies van der Rohe Award is a prestigious accolade, awarded every two years to the most successful architectural project in Europe. It was first held in 1988.

Winner: Deflat Kleiburg in Amsterdam

This year’s award went to the Dutch project Deflat Kleiburg in Amsterdam, created by the NL Architects and XVW architectuur studios. It is the first time ever that the winner was not a luxurious new construction, but rather the reconstruction of an existing building.

The international jury was thrilled by the innovative approach to the renovation of this extensive residential compound, which is among the largest in all of Holland. Instead of demolishing the frightful building, it was completely renovated and transformed into the Klusflat. It offers the type of living where tenants adapt the apartment units to suit their needs. The jury was delighted that the project was a result of the collective efforts of many people, and also favoured the topic of the project, which is very pressing at this time: affordable living.

Czech nomination

This year’s winners of the Mies van der Rohe Award were selected from 355 nominations from the EU member states. The Czech Republic was also a part of the competition, of course. There were 10 luxury buildings vying for the award this year, including the originally and intriguingly designed Archeopark Pavlov or the Pavilion of the Elementary School in Líbeznice. Another nominated luxury building called Dům v sadu (Orchard House) located in Prague’s Kyje district also looks very modern and innovative, or the exception Stezka v oblacích (Path in the Clouds) lookout tower in Dolní Morava.
