The new factory of Aston Martin in Wales, in the city of St. Athan, shall become the centre of electric vehicles. From this factory shall emerge the first luxury electric car of this make, same as the future electric cars, sub-branded ´Lagonda´.
The first vehicle that shall leave the new plant, is the electric version of a four-door model, Rapide. It was previously known as RapidE, but its official name will be Rapide E. The prototype of the vehicle had been unveiled in 2015, but now the carmaker came up with new information.
The battery, stored above the front axle, with a capacity of 65 kWh shall ensure a driving range on a single charge of over 320 km. The maximum speed will be 250 km/h and it will achieve 100 km/h from 0 in under 4 seconds.
The production will start in 2019 and the vehicle will be available in a limited number of just 155 pieces. It will be considered as a "warm up" in electricity-driven production series. It will be available to customers at the end of the next year.
After Rapide E the first electric car will follow in 2021, manufactured under the name of Lagonda. It was founded in 1904 and 43 years later it was bought by the Aston Martin carmaker. The Lagonda name was sporadically used on luxury sedans, the last time it was in 2014 - Lagonda Taraf. But Aston Martin has big plans with it for the future.
This year in Geneva it introduced the Lagonda Vision concept - a luxurious, futuristic vision of an electrical limousine. The carmaker also announced that it plans to revive this name for a line of future electric vehicles. Therefore, the sedan will be followed by an SUV and a coupé. Luxury vehicle and electrification enthusiasts thus have something to look forward to!
